Listening to a genre of metal newbies once in awhile emerges an energizing group that levitates the core to harmonious gratification leading a way to instantaneous global revitalization. Experiencing such a live indulgence to preview acts such as Killswitch Engage, Bury Your Dead, 2 Cents and ALL THAT REMAINS I was more than compelled to see into the minds of such musical beings. Accessing toward my destination while passing the on goers of fans waiting outside the venue screaming I was lead backstage to talk face to face with Prosthetic Records recording artist ALL THAT REMAINS vocalist Philip Labonte. Relaxed in a tranquil demeanor Philip extended a warm invitation to converse while a chaotic world consisting of sound checks rang loud in the background while we sat down to talk.

All That Remains

Jussi: Greetings there, wanted to say thanks for taking the time out of your busy schedule for this interview. But first things first, I wanted to say congrats to the band on your nomination for Best Metal video of 2006 for This Calling on MTV2’s Headbanger’s Ball and Revolver Magazine. How does the group feel/you feel about that?
Philip Labonte:
That’s cool. I mean it’s like... a lot of bands that come out with a lot of really cool videos this year. So to me it’s like... it’s cool to be looked as one of the band that came out with something worth while. So it’s cool.

Jussi: So far how has this tour been treating you guys?
Philip:
Awesome. I mean probably the best tour, the best club tour that we ever done in the US, that’s not like, you know Ozz Fest. This was probably better than Ozz Fest. Sound was cool, sound was way better than last year. But I think this is pretty much the best tour we’ve ever done. It’s been amazing!

Jussi: Heard band is currently seeking a new drummer?
Philip:
Yes.

Jussi: Give me more info on that?
Philip:
Shannon Lucas our old drummer is no longer with us. So right now we have a gentleman Tim Yueng filling in. He is a well known and established drummer from a lot of projects. He’s picking up the spot quite nicely.

Jussi: So far how has Tim Yeung fit into the temporary mix of the group?
Philip:
We all get along better. Shannon was a crappy guy and difficult to get along with. And Tim’s real easy to get along with so it’s much… a very light hearted feeling throughout the band.

Jussi: Who asked Tim to fill for this temp drum opening?
Philip:
I did. When Shannon told me he was quitting, I called up Dino Cazares who Tim is currently working with, I asked “Can I borrow your drummer” he said “Yeah” so, I called up Tim and I was like “You busy”? I called up Dino and he said it was cool. “Do you want to come out and fill in for a couple of weeks”? And he was like yeah sure. So it worked out really…really well. He actually learned the stuff really fast and he’s done a really good job so far.

Jussi: Heard the group is going to tour with Dragonforce for a 3 week tour in the UK. You gents jazzed up about that?
Philip:
Yeah. The Dragonforce dudes. We did a month in the US with them right after Ozz Fest and now we’re going over there to do three weeks in the UK. The whole tour over here is sold out the whole tour over there I think is already sold out. So it’s going to be great... going to be a great time. There’s gong to be a lot of people and this is going to be our third, I mean fourth time in the UK, third time as just… that has a real extensive tour in the UK. And things are going to be really cool. Our record got really good, really great reviews I the press over there. So this is the first time being over there since the record came out. So we’ll see what happens.

Jussi: Do you find the response to your latest release The Fall Of Ideals to have mixed reviews from abroad than in the states?
Philip:
No, I think that our reviews have been extremely consistent and extremely complimentary. Like all the stuff that I’ve read and seen. Very, very rarely do we get a bad review.

Jussi: So more positive feedback more or less?
Philip:
Yeah. Positive… positive all across the board. I mean we have 5 K’s in Kerrang, 9 out of 10 in Metal Hammer, we get you know, really kick ass. I mean 9 out of 10 in Decibel. So we get really good reviews. And that’s a fairly… it’s been fairly across the board, been evenly high very good reviews. I can’t complain.

Jussi: Do you feel the use of Myspace is beneficial to the group? One can say that it gives more of a personal connection to communication to the group via the fans posting comments on the bands page on this site.
Philip:
Yeah a little bit if you’re active with or in a band and active with your bands page and actually do reply to your fans and stuff. Then yeah it’s very, very interactive type of thing. Cause I mean like kids, some kids are pumped when you go to their page and say like “Hey, what’s going on man. Thanks for you support” and blah blah blah and they really get into it.

Jussi: Back on mentioning of the video. For This Calling, what was it like working w/Frankie Nasso?
Philip:
It was alright. Frank’s a nice guy, his cool.

Jussi: Is there anything the band wants to do differently concept wise with a future video?
Philip:
We recently did a video for The Air That I Breathe and it just came out and that one we did with Darren Doane who did a ton of stuff. He did the last Everytime I Die video. He’s done a lot of stuff that’s really cool and in our new video we are so happy with him.

Jussi: Or would it have to do with the theme of the song that the video idea is approached?
Philip:
Sometimes we’ll go ahead and send the director the lyrics and stuff. The specific for the video The Air That I Breathe was just like we want explosions and we want helicopters. And the guy was like awesome, I can do that. And we’re like great! And that was the whole concept is things blowing up, us flying around in a helicopter and us rockin’ it. So it worked out really well and it was easy to do.

Jussi: Plans for the New Year for the group?
Philip:
Right after the, well end of January we start our first headlining, US headlining tour and its going to be us Misery Signals, The Human Abstract opening slot is going to be split from Cellador and Light This City.

Jussi: Any off the wall experiences so far this tour or tours of the past?
Philip:
Ah, nah we’re pretty much low key dudes. We just kinda chill out you know.

Jussi: Is there any particular band(s) or festivals that the band would like to share a stage with?
Philip:
Uh... I don’t know. I would do maybe Gigantour or something like that. It would be cool. I can’t think of any specific bands that I’d like to tour with cause there’s so many bands that we have toured with that are really cool. Every time you go out with a band just as long as they want to get along it’s usually a really good time. So it would be cool to tour with Slayer... perhaps. (laughs) It would be cool to tour with Carcass if they got back together.

Jussi: Two words to describe All THAT REMAINS?
Philip:
Fuckin’ metal!

Jussi: Any current listening favorites?
Philip:
Um... thinking to what I have been listening to I really like the new Cannibal Corpse-Kill its awesome. Killswitch record is good, that’s all that really struck me recently. I like the new Dragonforce record Human Rampage. I’m into the band that I’ve been touring with are the kinds of bands I’ve been into recently.

Jussi: How does group keep busy between shows?
Philip:
Ah, we don’t...we drive. We’re in a van so sleep and vanning it.

Jussi: Wanted to say thank you for this interview and much success on the tour.
Philip:
