Headlining this years Ozz Festival the band GIZMACHI sets the pace with their latest power-driving album The Imbuing, an album filled with intensifying musical gratification intoxicating listeners of extreme taste. I recently had the chance to interview lead vocalist Sean Kane on the bands current record, upcoming tour and how they were able to get the almighty Clown 6 (Slipknot) involved with their musical creation. From slight changes of time scheduling to cell phone connection mishaps one has to give to mind what else was revealed in the interview.

Jussi: Wanted to say Hello, btw thanks for putting such a brutal CD together? Congrats on the Ozz Fest gig?
Sean Kane:
Thank you very much.

Jussi: Wanted to mention that when doing my homework on GIZMACHI there was mentioning of the band on VH1’s (Hear Music First) for which astounded me considering the bands musical nature. What was your response on this?
Sean:
I thought it was really cool cause I never would have expected a band of our caliber, when I say by caliber of how heavy we are. The type of music to be on VH-1’s website, so I thought it was a really good opportunity to reach out to that audience because you know VH-1 does not cater to any growing metal scene.

Jussi: With the recording of the bands release The Imbuing how long did it take to record?
Sean:
The recording I would say took a month and half. In total we did it in intervals according to Tom’s schedule back in forth from tours. So we did two and half weeks here, and when he came home we did another two and half weeks in the mixing process. So it took about a month and half.

Jussi: Seeing that Crahan’s first ever-produced album, overall how did he go with bringing GIZMACHI’s intensity forward sound wise?
Sean:
You see this is the coolest thing about us working with Clown. All of our songs appear on those records exactly the way we wrote them. No one changed our music or anything like that. He was basically there for you know... moral support. Like a cheerleader and he also added lots of ambiance and color to our music. It was a learning experience.

Jussi: How did the Sublimal Verses Tour with Slipknot go?
Sean:
The Sublimal Verses tour was definitely an eye opener for us; we learned what to do and what not to do. You know it was like... I think the third week of touring we ever done and only two weeks before that. So it was definitely a pretty new experience for us especially playing for that many people, so it was a learning experience.

Jussi: For one that has never heard of the band, what is one to expect upon listening to this CD?
Sean:
Beautiful disaster and heavy as you want it to be it can be as beautiful as you like it to be. You know we proud ourselves in that in not being confided to any one highway, we can go wherever we want. And we will continue to go wherever we want.

Jussi: GIZMACHI has played some named acts to major festivals such as New England Metal Fest to Download Festival, what was the overall experience being apart of such events?
Sean:
Ah, the events were amazing especially download, I mean playing in front of 10,000 kids. All you do is look out and all you see is kids. Doing the New England Metal Fest was cool; you know we are happy just to be apart of everything that’s going on in the metal explosion. So it is really cool to be on the forefront at least what is going on. I mean to be apart of Ozz Fest as well is an honor.

Jussi: Knowing that Crahan was interested in GIZMACHI since a CD was given to him, was the band surprised that the group was able to grab his listening attention?
Sean:
Well it didn’t exactly happen overnight it took over two and half years for us talking back and forth. We weren’t surprised cause we believe in ourselves, we believe in our music. We are very proud of what we write and how we write. So we just figured if Clown wasn’t into us it’s his loss. But you know thank God he was, so we are here right now.

Jussi: When approached with actually recording with him and his label this must have been quite exciting. How did you take it?
Sean:
Well it was very exciting that after two and half years it wasn’t all bullshit. You know, we built a friendship with him, a relationship with him. He was going to make due on all his promises and kept his word. That is pretty outstanding of him to make everything move forward. You know what we are pretty confident anyway with or without Clown in standing and moving forward. So we believe in what we do, so when he did say that “I am going to sign you guys” it was quite exciting for a lot of people.

Jussi: What do you think are some of GIZMACHI’s song strengths to perform live?
Sean:
Wandering Eyes, Voice Of SanityWearing Skin. I would say we play Burn really well to... you know we play all of our stuff. I mean our favorite song playing live would most definitely be Voice Of Sanity without a doubt!

Jussi: Do you think these past months has been a trying time for GIZMACHI considering there is rumor of touring for two years?
Sean:
It’s not trying, it’s exciting. The rumor for touring for two years is a great opportunity for a band to exceed since we just came out, for which means for the next two years your going to hear our music. So it is nothing but a genuine opportunity for the five of us in GIZMACHI. So in the next two years we look forward to playing in front of every single person we can.

Jussi: What was the bands reaction to being one of the groups that is to grace the stage at this years Ozz Fest 2005?
Sean:
We were really, really, really taken back by it. Cause you know they had a whole entire line up chosen already and they only had a couple of mystery bands, two mystery bands. We didn’t think out of all of the mystery bands we were going to end up being one so we really, really, really… excited over the fact on getting Ozz Fest, cause Ozz Fest is such a big deal and you reach a wide variety of audience. It’s huge for us.

Jussi: Where do you see GIZMACHI in the next three years?
Sean:
Well be in the same exact place as far as human beings we are right now. Hopefully we’ll have a wider fan base and a lot more people will be in the music. Who knows where we will in a few years.

Jussi: What happened to the Six Feet Under tour that downfallen?
Sean:
I wish I knew. (laughs) I heard rumors that Six Feet Under didn’t get such a guarantee they were suppose to get and they just blew the tour off and heard some other rumors. Basically this big rumor, the rumor mill that is flying around. I’ll tell you that I wasn’t to happy about the tour being cancelled; I thought it sucked for all the kids that wanted to go out and see that tour. So were out here right now still trying to make it work.

Jussi: Going back to the album here was there anything different that the group wanted to do differently?
Sean:
No, we are absolutely happy with that album. So I think nothing would be different.

Jussi: Each song seems to take a life of it’s own in all extreme ways of intensity, was there a certain vibe or element that when recording came across through the music?
Sean:
No, that’s how these dudes write. These four dudes from my band are very talented musicians they don’t need some producer sitting over their asses telling that you need to be intense or how to write their music. All the songs are different because is how they write them they don’t try to do it; it’s just how it works out. So they don’t need any kick in the ass for there stuff to be intense. It just comes out that way.

Jussi: Any current news happenings with GIZMACHI?
Sean:
No. Just doing this tour and geared up for Ozz Fest since we are going to be on Ozz Fest all summer long. We gotta bunch of tours up in the air for the fall and we’ll see where we end up.

Jussi: Any odd experiences these past months being on tour? If so, what was one of them?
Sean:
Hmm. Europe in a whole was pretty odd. Found out the American money is not worth shit over there. I had to pay $14 dollars for a meal at McDonald’s in American money cause EU money is like two to one over there. You know you get a dollar but in EU you get only 50 cents. So it was pretty odd for us when we got over there. Europe as a whole was pretty odd, it was a good experience for us but definitely… a surreal experience for all of us though.

Jussi: How did you think the crowds reacted to GIZMACHI?
Sean:
Over in Europe?
Jussi: Yeh.
Sean:
We had a very good reaction. I think that we did two shows with Papa Roach that went really well. Papa Roach and Helmet, festivals and playing with Slipknot were great. I think we have an overall great reaction from the kids that did see us.

Jussi: Wanted to say thank you Sean Kane and the rest of the GIZMACHI bunch for this interview and unleashing some killer music. Good Luck!
Sean:
Thanks for this awesome interview. I’ll talk to you soon. Goodbye.
