Infectious sounds to an impending group of brutal potent Italy’s own INFECTION CODE debuts with a landmark album cutting a true force of intensity on Sterile.
Frontman Gabriele shares his take on the bands sheer tormenting quality, negative aspects of influence and the power that drives this group to new heights. Picking his brain for vile information he explains what makes this group spread like an infected musical disease.

Infection Code

Jussi: Before we kick off into this brief time with this interview can you tell me how the band originated it’s sound? Was it from various influences that each member brought into the INFECTION CODE mix or was it something that evolved over time?
Gabriele:
Our sound is a sort of mix between musical influences of each member and a development of our process of songwriting. We don't decide what we play or what we write. We give more value to the jam sessions or our inspiration when we're playing in that moment. Our first songs were very similar, in vein of a kind nu metal bands likes Korn, Deftones with a singular bit of thrash metal. From H.I.V 999 (our first MCD) our sound evolved with more personal and original ideas. Samplers, electronics machinery, beat-blast drums and more growling vocals gives to our sound a touch of infected originality. We love to endure with our musical influences and we try to play with lots of extreme musical elements such as industrial, noise, death metal and hardcore. We endure with our negative feelings, with heart, soul and mind.

Jussi: It seems that Italy is coming out with some pretty intense bands (Ex, Graveworm, Lacuna Coil and countless other styles) do you think that these bands are putting a mark for extreme music groups coming from a country that seems to lack any publicity for its musical talents? (Don’t get me wrong maybe it’s me.)
Gabriele:
In Italy there are many incredible and original bands can via with other European and U.S acts. I respect Lacuna Coil and Graveworm and other Italian bands who try to bring the Italian metal in other foreign countries. I'm very proud to know that Lacuna Coil sells more 200000 copies of their album in U.S. It's a mark for the future. For our future. Unfortunately in Italy we must to work very hard to get a really underground rock metal scene. There isn't a scene that supports us. There aren't good clubs, there aren’t booking agencies and in particular, there isn’t an audience who supports the bands. For example, with Sterile we had good reviews in all Italian magazines, many interviews, and good responses about our few gigs and a good distribution in the stores but the interest towards INFECTION CODE is derisible compared with others foreign band because the Italian metal fans prefer an unknown foreign metal band. We have no official musical culture; our mass media gives few visibilities to an Italian band. It's a state of mind but we hope that it changes and we'll destroy it!!!

Jussi: With the unique quality of INFECTION CODE’s sound, do you think that the bands musical style bridges into something almost sinister yet lyrically overpowering considering the subject matter involved?
Gabriele:
Our sound is sinister, dark and obscure with an extreme musical conception. It's our trademark in this era, but I don't think our musical style bridges something in a new style. It isn't important for us. We play to cure our sickness and to liberate our negative vibes. INFECTION CODE's sound is unique for this reason. Many people say “it's only arrogant” but we don't care it.

Jussi: How would you compare the bands sound to others out there? Do you think that the group has something musically different to offer than most bands? If so, what would be the musical benefits?
Gabriele:
It could be arrogant but our sound is unique and it's more difficult to label in some musical genres. We have many musical influences and within our songs you could be hear a bit of Godflesh, Brutal Truth, Ministry Napalm Death, Converge, Neurosis and NIN. They are acts that impressed our sound ever so we have a personal mix. An infected and perverted mix. Our personal decay. It's very hard to listen to our music, because it's an involved songwriting and we don't like to play in a classical way (verse- bridge- chorus). This is good for us, for our taste but it isn't good for the music business and I’m not saying about mainstream but underground scene where there are some rules and some trends to follow. Actually it's great to hear and support some shit like Caliban, Lamb of God, Unearth and everyone listens to this acts. For me is a trend, like some years ago it was black metal and nu metal. INFECTION CODE don’t play this shit. We go for our aim without trends, without rules only the passion drives our hearts for genuine music. Music equals contaminations equals experiments.

Jussi: Who started INFECTION CODE and how did the band come about?
Gabriele:
INFECTION CODE was born in 1999 from five musicians. We decide to give life a new project, a new different project. Unfortunately we meet some problems, because, especially for the first year we have no a steady line-up. For many months we worked with some session men like the guitar but in 2003 we found a great infect man who he helped to makes a strong line-up. Now we are in harmony!!! Harmony Corruption until the End!!!

Jussi: With the current release of Sterile, how would you put into words the overall sound of this intense circle of torment?
Gabriele:
It's not easy. It's a personal point of view but I think Sterile is a dirty, cynical and psychotic way to see our lifestyle in this empty society where we live in. But I repeat Sterile is the soundtrack of our negative feelings. It's a human death trip.

Jussi: Any planned shows lined up for the group?
Gabriele:
In August we're going to play in Milan then we will stop the shows because we would record new fucking stuff.

Jussi: What can a first time listener expect when listening to Sterile?
Gabriele:
Good question!!! I think it's very hard to listen to Sterile for the first time. Our music is not easy and the listener must give attention to many musical passages and a many overdubs that we made to record. I'm sure that our listener will be surprise of this negative atmospheres and a dark mood within our songs and I think that he isn't going to bore with Sterile because there are some types of extreme musical files A sort of contamination for his ears a food for your brain!!!

Jussi: How long did it take to record this release? Was it difficult to record in any other aspect?
Gabriele:
Six months. Six months of madness, six months of anger six months of compact work. We are proud of this fucking son!!!!!

Jussi: Can you describe what went into the recording that made Sterile such a brutal masterpiece to record? Any other outer influences come into play?
Gabriele:
When we recorded Sterile we haven't a good way of life for many personal reasons that determined the songwriting of Sterile. It's a brutal masterpiece because you can find our perversions, our demons and our hate. We exorcize our evil in this way!!!

Jussi: Do you find it hard at times for others to take INFECTION CODE’s style seriously since the band has many diverse sound styles with this release?
Gabriele:
Really I didn't find people to take INFECTION CODE's style seriously because we are extremely serious with the music, in general with the art. We respect who respects the music. Our sound is various with many musical influences reinterpreted with our personal feelings and smell, but I don't believe that a fan who takes us seriously for this.

Jussi: What would be the musical highlights of this CD? Any song in particular that is a band favorite to perform?
Gabriele:
There are some songs that I prefer to perform compared with others. Almost Meat, Origin and Aphasic are killer songs for a brutal and bloodline show but besides songs like HumanDeath Trip or Narcotica have a mesmeric and slowly stride that I like it!!!! General highlights could be the oddness to play extreme music!!!

Jussi: What are some of the group’s influences?
Gabriele:
In general all kind of music. Actually I listen to old music like prog or 70's rock like Black Sabbath, Free, Genesis, Van Der Graf Generator, King Crimson. The others listen to electronic acts like Ulver, Jesus Acid Christ, Hocico, NIN or some bands like Neurosis, The great Deceiver, Dillinger Escape Plan.

Jussi: How would you compare the last album to this current one?
Gabriele:
The last album titled LIFE CONTINUTY POINT was enough unemotionally compared with Sterile, and the production like sound was too clean while Sterile has a great groove and the sound is more rough. It's live.

Jussi: There is mention that Tommy Talamaca (Sadist) produced this CD? Were there other people that assisted in Sterile as well?
Gabriele:
Tommy Talamnca (guitar player and mastermind of legendary thrash metal band SADIST) is our sound engineer and producer until first album H.I.V 999. We trust him and in his work because has a good musical experience like musician and sound producer.

Jussi: Besides the band being “Industrial Noise Makers” how do you perceive a new listener will react to being musically altered by INFECTION CODE?
Gabriele:
I hope our listener will react with passion for our music, because our music comes from our hearts and only an altered listener can love INFECTION CODE.

Jussi: Any current happenings with the band?
Gabriele:
Actually we're writing new stuff and we're looking for a good deal with a foreign label for the next album.

Jussi: Just wanted to say thank you for taking your time out for this interview. Keep the music alive and ever so brutal and for putting such an intense record. Keep us posted on INFECTION CODE’s happenings.
Gabriele:
That's all for now. Thanks for your support and for your time spent for INFECTION CODE!!! Thanks!!! OMNIA SUNT COMMUNIA!
