It is rare that I fall head over heals for a promo, but once I heard Bloodline from IRRBLOSS, I was completely enamored with the music of this band. Hailing from Sweden, IRRBLOSS’ music seemed to put a spell on me the way Opeth did when I first listened to them. After reviewing their current album Bloodline, I was stoked to be asked if I wanted to interview this Viking Black Metal band. Jumping at this chance, I spoke with founder/vocalist Irrbloss, who just happens to be the namesake of this band.

Sioux: Greetings and congratulations on the new album entitled Bloodline. It holds some mighty impressive songs, are you happy with the way the album turned out?
Irrbloss:
Greetings to you and thank you. I am very happy with the way the album turned out and it seems like people enjoys it. It makes me happy that we have been giving the chance to reach out to people with our music.

Sioux: Can you talk about the song entitled Irrbloss? The lyrics about the light in the forest are quite intriguing, is this based on any type of Viking legend? Also, Irrbloss must be a significant name, as it is also the band's name and name of the founder and vocalist.
Irrbloss:
The phenomenon Irrbloss is an old myth about a small creature walking around with a lantern deceiving people in the forest. I am not entirely sure that this goes all the way back to the Viking era but this myth goes a really long way back in the Swedish history so i would not be surprised if it did. The name Irrbloss means a lot to me because i have used it for such a long time. I came up with this name in my first real band. It also fits the band well because of our lyrical and musical genre.

Sioux: Do you consider IRRBLOSS as more of a black metal band or more of a Viking metal band, or both?
Irrbloss:
This is a really hard question and I will have to be careful of what I say hehe. We have gotten a lot of criticism about what we call our music and what we play. I will say like this. Musically we play Melodic black metal with riffs that are influenced buy Viking and folk music. Lyrically it is mainly Viking inspired with tales from Norse Mythology.

Sioux: Listening to the Bloodline album, IRRBLOSS comes across as a band that really has their songwriting together, both musically and lyrically. How long did it take you to write these songs and is songwriting an easy or difficult process for you?
Irrbloss:
I think it is a bit of both; some songs were harder to write then others. I often write the lyrics at home at my computer and then I just fit it in to the songs. Frid (guitarist) is a very good songwriter and that makes it pretty easy for me to fit the lyrics into the songs. The song Bloodline were one of those songs that was really easy to make. It all fitted well the first time I tried adding the lyrics into it. I am not entirely sure of how long this album took to write because 4 songs were already done when we started writing this album. They were songs from the demo Hymns. I would say the 5 remaining songs took probably about a month to write and adjust.

Sioux: IRRBLOSS sounds very unique from other bands, tell me some of your influences and inspirations.
Irrbloss:
Our inspirations and influence is very hard to say because we all listens to different music but when we started we said we wanted something like old Ulver and later on we picked up some influence from early Opeth but i can’t say that they are that big influence either. We probably have a small dose of Dissection in our song as well as Swedish folk songs. I think that because we have such different music styles we get a pretty unique sound. I myself listen to a lot of Viking metal bands and also a lot of Black metal so that is what I give to the band.

Sioux: IRRBLOSS recently welcomed a new bass player into the band. Was it an easy transition into the band for him, or is it a difficult adjustment?
Irrbloss:
Vrind adjusted easy into IRRBLOSS even though that he did not listen to our kind of music he adjusted well. I think that the hardest part were not the adjustment because he is a very skilled musician, I think it was the kicking of Rym that was the hardest part. At least for Vettfall (guitarist) that lives with him.

Sioux: What are your plans this coming year? Any tours or festival appearances?
Irrbloss:
At this point we are writing new material and we hope to start the recording of it this fall. Hopefully we have sold enough albums to have the next album financed otherwise we must wait until we sold enough or pay for it ourselves. No tours or festivals have been booked at this point so let’s hope for that.

Sioux: Well I thank you for your time and doing the honor of giving an interview. I shall leave the last words to you.
Irrbloss:
Thank you all who have supported us and bought our album, if you have not done that yet please do so we can record our next album hehe. I hope to see you all at our shows.
