Every music fan who likes epic as well as heroic sounds will come across the name NOMANS LAND sooner or later. The so far released albums The Last Son Of The Fjord and Hammerfrost are outstanding works in the Viking Metal genre. Finally the band convinced me completely with their performance at Ragnarök Metal Festival in Germany, April 2006. On stage, the multilayer atmosphere unfolded best, drawing the bow of moods from cheerful over relaxed to contemplative. So I posed Hjervard (bass & vocals) some questions about touring, the scene in Russia and some other subjects…

Nomans Land

Leo: Hello! Is everything okay after the concert trip?
Hjervard:
Thank you. Everything is ok.

Leo: I really liked your show at Ragnarök Festival in Germany! Are you content with the fans' reactions?
Hjervard:
We are satisfied with our fans. I was surprised that it was so positive & active. It was our second performance in German & the reaction of auditory & atmosphere in concert hall was very pleasant for me.

Leo: How did you get in contact with Metal and when did this happen?
Hjervard:
I was fifteen when I saw Metallica’s One on MTV.

Leo: What was your first experience concerning Viking Metal?
Hjervard:
Since that time I’ve started to get interested in Scandinavian history of Vikings epoch. I’ve already listened to metal music for long time. Now I can’t remember when & where and how it happened that I’ve heard the Viking Metal at first time. So it was the beginning.

Leo: What is the most important thing in Viking Metal for you? What about clichés?
Hjervard:
Romanticism & power which appear in soul when you are listening for Viking Metal are important. When I came to NOMANS LAND I’ve had problems of private character. And I remember when I’ve heard NOMANS LAND records at first time. I thought that nothing can oppose me & I can overcome everything. It is really so.

Leo: Did you ever have some problems with your neck after a show?
Hjervard:
No, now everything is ok. Maybe it is due to several years of rehearsals & concerts. But at the beginning it was very hard to rise up your head of pillow at the next morning after the concert.

Leo: Do you often visit concerts?
Hjervard:
Sometimes I visit concerts, but usually it is a performance of famous groups from foreign countries. Last time I visited Anathema’s performance at St. Petersburg & I liked it so much.

Leo: It is a problem in the Viking/Pagan Metal scene that fans are easily pressed near right extremist ideas. Is it the same in Russia and what’s your opinion about that?
Hjervard:
My opinion is negative. It is the same in Russia. And it is very unpleasant to perform in front of people screaming nationalistic slogans and so on. But at our concerts it happens very rarely. But I know some groups which are satisfied with it.

Leo: Was it hard to buy records in Russia in your teen age? Wherefrom did you get your stuff?
Hjervard:
Yes, when I was a teen it was very hard to get the records of groups who played metal music. At that time we could not buy CDs, only cassettes with “standard” groups such as Metallica, Sepultura, Iron Maiden & Accept. It was very hard to get something else.

Leo: How did your parents react when they realized you are addicted to Metal?
Hjervard:
I can’t say that my mother was glad when I’ve started to wear long hair & listen to metal music. But she can’t cope with me. In time she understood that my own opinion is more important for me than somebody else & only then I can pay my attention to other people’s opinion.

Leo: Are CDs expensive in your hometown?
Hjervard:
Nowadays there is wide dissemination of pirates & it’s very hard to get the licensed CDs in Russia. So the pirated edition CDs is cheap, but licensed production is very expensive.

Leo: How important is music for you? Do you spend much time for composing, rehearsing and promotional work?
Hjervard:
Music is my life. We are in other professions which are not connected to music, but it is only the way how to earn money for ourselves & our families. But we try to dedicate to our group so much time as it possible.

Leo: Do the fans recognize you and ask for an autograph?
Hjervard:
Yes, it happens sometimes.

Leo: Do you hold contact to other bands? Is the scene healthy and do you work together?
Hjervard:
It’s not a simple question. For many Russian groups, who achieved something, the heist achievement is in participation in local festivals. It is a lot of talented musicians & groups, but the situation such as groups haven’t opportunity to make records & to progress in their creativity, that’s why they disorganize before they get a contract with the record labels. We do not hold contact to other bands and we didn’t work together.

Leo: Do you have hobbies? Is there enough time for them?
Hjervard:
Yes. Girls are my hobby ? Sometimes I can find a time for it.

Leo: Do you like nature?
Hjervard:
I like nature & I like when there are a few people around & you can forget about big city life & think about yours.

Leo: How will the world look like in ten years in your opinion?
Hjervard:
I hope that the world will exist after a ten years & nothing terrible will happen. I suppose that progress will reach unbelievable heights.

Leo: Whereat are you able to recreate best?
Hjervard:
In Switzerland.

Leo: How do the plans for the future look like, did you start to write songs for the next album?
Hjervard:
Releasing of our new album Raven Flight is scheduled for 1st of December 2006. After that we also plan to go touring around Germany.

Leo: Thanks very much for answering my questions, have a nice day!
Hjervard:
Thank you. Bye.
