After several tries to do an interview with Bryan Erickson during the Hex Angel time, I snapped at the chance around the release of VELVET ACID CHRIST’s 10th full-length Lust For Blood. Bryan is known to be a battlesome and militant zeitgeist, always struggling thru business-related trouble and sort of bullheaded music-wise, though downright honest. On Lust For Blood he changed his stylistic direction again, as for me not in a way that seems to be matured yet. Time to ask what’s going on in the VAC camp…

Bryan Erickson

Dajana: Hex Angel was critically acclaimed, brought you into the (Bilboard)charts with the single Pretty Toy alongside with some pop icons. You won the sound check in German magazine Sonic Seducer and the limited box was quickly sold out (I have one ;)). Could you achieve the same with Lust For Blood? As for me I’d say there is less excitement this time (at least here in Germany), but I might be wrong… How was the response?
Hexfix93:
I don't know anything about how German reaction. I don't live there. With Hex Angel I had Dependent really pushing my product, on Lust For Blood, Metropolis is doing it, and they don't seem to do as good of a job in Europe that is. They are great here in America, but in Europe I still think they are lacking.

Dajana: What has changed regarding the equipment, recordings, techniques, songwriting… etc. between Lust For Blood and Hex Angel? Any new approaches, influences, stylistics?
Hexfix93:
Yes, Todd entered the band. I bought better gear, a Roland Jupiter 8, a Viruc C, and JP 8080 again. Ladytron, Pink Dots and The Cure were the biggest influences... We wrote a lot of this LP on acoustic guitar because modern daws suck at recording midi these days, and play back like a sloppy drunk computer. We are now going back to the Atari for tight aggressive feel that PCs and MACs just don’t have.

Dajana: [... take this one as a continuation of the former question he did not answer, I asked about the many stylistics he used on the new album. I miss something like a red thread, something that bridges or connects all these different areas. As for me the new record feels like neither fish nor fowl...] Malicious tongues might say you better turn back to the drugs to make music in the veins of your early albums many fans still prefer… (That actually was a statement I heard now and then when talking about the new record)
Hexfix93:
Well, due to a lot of gear trouble, I ended up making a lot of slower songs because the PC couldn't do fast aggressive stuff well at all. I was kind of handcuffed the last two CDs with PC daws. I'm way out of that now. I hope to bring the aggro edge back into VAC. But it’s nice to see a change in the direction now and again, and I said from the start that this would be a more feminine record...

Dajana: Between your releases you are always faltering if you should go on with VAC. In regular intervals rumors are going around you are on the verge to put VAC to rest, or to quit the music biz generally… Why this iffiness? Or asking the other way: What gives you still the power and energy to go on?
Hexfix93:
Because I struggle so hard with the studio side of things the last 5 years, modern PCs suck for music production; they sound like shit, and don't sequence external hardware correctly. I don't like the direction the scene has gone in. I am not the same person I was when I made Fun With Knives etc... I've changed over the years in some ways.

Dajana: When you will finally tour Europe again? And what could we expect from a VAC show? I mean, you’re backed by big label and good working agencies… shows should be booked easily without much financial risks.
Hexfix93:
I'm not sure. Still working that out..

Dajana: I heard you are quite often in Germany. Is this a private pleasure or any plans with that?
Hexfix93:
I'm never in Germany…

Dajana: You switched from Dependent to Hardbeat? What has changed?
Hexfix93:
Another business falling out. Issues. Not worth noting…

Dajana: Music gets more and more blend into each other. Everything is possible. Nowadays there is hardly any “pure” style to find. You can almost call all styles “Crossover”. What you think would be a good, new and innovative combination? What should still be tried out?
Hexfix93:
If I reveal that now, someone would steal my ideas... No thanks…

Dajana: Apropos… do you still have a vision musical wise after this many years spanning career? What’s left for you still to be achieved one day in these matters?
Hexfix93:
I want to produce better songs, better sound, and more emotions. It never ends. And if I put VAC to rest, I will continue Toxic Coma for sure or maybe start something else. I won’t give up on music.

Dajana: You are known for having a sharp tongue regarding other artists/bands, what brought you the one and the other negative headline and some verbal fights… Why this stress and attention to bands you don’t like?
Hexfix93:
CONTROVERSY! It sells records. Makes people talk.

Dajana: You’re fighting against a lot of things and for a lot of things. You once said: “I want people to fight the evil governments of the world who start wars. I want people to wake up to the cruelty that is happening to animals, and do something to stop it.”… How much activist you are in your daily life? Meaning, are you someone who spends money for organizations, is active in them, or parties (again), demonstrating, rebelling in the streets?
Hexfix93:
I'm anti social. So I do all my fighting in my music and in my lifestyle. I used to be active, but I must focus on music...

Dajana: You are a very open person, revealing much of your inner I on your website, blog and forum. Don’t you fear that people get too close to you or that you offer your butt for personal attacks?
Hexfix93:
Attack away. I don’t care. Whatever, anyone can say anything; I only put that stuff up there for people who care…

Dajana: To finish this interview a few short-cuts:
- The best thing ever you put together?
Hexfix93:
The new Toxic Coma. And the new Emilie Autumn and Brain Leisure
remixes we did.

- Your biggest/best aptitude/worst one?
Hexfix93:

- A dream you’d love to see come true?
Hexfix93:

Hexfix93:
Away from all the stupidity of this world.

- Favorite motto/quote?
Hexfix93:
"PUNCH A CHRISTIAN IN THE FACE"
