You can start a new year in many ways: With a bunch of resolutions of course, done and forgotten 3 days later. With the same old shit going on you finished the last year. And you can start a new year with death, celebrating how to die. Musically. I go for the last one, of course. And so I get into the new 12 months chapter with the slogan: THREE WAYS TO DIE. At my local club • Sputnik Café • three Death Metal bands meet to let us die in three different ways. It’s the ultimate killer of the new-year-hangover.

For rad 6 Euro doors allow entry for the lame folk at 7pm. First Death Metal package on stage has to be :: RESURRECTED ::, a band I lost sight of way too long. Not that the guys have been too active, music-wise as well as regarding live shows, but well, shame on me. Luckily, shows like this one turn back attention to the local scene :) The band’s last full-length already dates back to 2009, with an EP following in 2012. But it seems RESURRECTED gain momentum; they played two new songs and have entered the studio to record new material. Aaaaahh, 45 minutes of excellent and groovy Grindcore-tinged brutal Death Metal!
Setlist: New Reign Rising, Dripping With Blood, Gun Shot Victim, Bewareness Of Truth, Urge To Murder, Deadly Lessons, Bloodmarked, Slumdog..., Hidden By Disguise, Covered With Maggots, Butchered In Excrement
Bassist Ben Bays has no needs to leave the stage as he also plays with :: DECEMBER FLOWER :: The melodic death metallers from Lower Saxony are somewhat of our magazine darlings. Their debut release When All Life Ends… already scored a full rating on NH and did not lose any awesomeness 2 years later. Those songs live are still a force. DECEMBER FLOWER have also entered the studio to record the sophomore, but unfortunately we did not get a first glimpse of new material here. Be prepared for something new later this year. Meanwhile the audience woke up and started to mosh and headbang :)
Setlist: The Apprentice, Your Darkest Path, Moloch, Life Ends, Lost In Twilight, As Darkness Reigns, Haunted By Horror, Aeon, Despise Your Life, And Blood Has To Be Shed, The Fountain
Two beers later it’s up to the :: FALLEN SAINTS :: to finish this first musical slugfest in 2014. To be honest, I never heard of this band before. Hailing from Lower Saxony too, this band is around since 1999, with two albums up their sleeves and memorable support slots such as for Bolt Thrower. Their last record has even more dust on it but a new one is already recorded. It is entitled Evolution Has Failed and half of the songs got presented live. FALLEN SAINTS did not leave such impression as December Flower did, but front man Oliver Meyer appeared to be a real entertainer and got the crowd up once again. Great show, great evening, great first concert in 2014 :)
Setlist: Evolution Has Failed, Eyes Should See, Winterdawn, Thru Fire, Death Knight, Insomnia, My Hell, Down To The Rats, Bleeding Society, Batallion Mankind // Death Man Walking
