DEVIN
TOWNSEND... a man with many faces, and many names. He is unbelievably
popular, loved, adored, he is a genius and a lunatic and almost
canonized. He is called the nutty professor, a sound puzzler,
metal fusionist, progressive rock/metal lover and a divine singer…
and the list goes on.
It is with great regret that DEVIN TOWNSEND has laid his
band Strapping Young Lad to rest in 2007. Afterwards he took a
longer break to recover and to be a first-time dad. Now DEVIN
TOWNSEND is back, first with a crazy solo album entitled Ziltoid
The Omniscient, and then with two (Addicted,
Ki) of a 4 albums spanning concept dubbed as DEVIN
TOWNSEND PROJECT, with alternating guest musicians.
And finally, finally he also plays live again, filling up the
days between his festival appearances with a couple of club shows
:)

That DEVIN
TOWNSEND PROJECT found its way to the Underground
in Cologne is… odd. It’s such a small club. The Live
Music Hall next corner would have been much better, so I think.
At the end, the Underground was very crowded but not sold out.
And since it was a hot day it was clear the venue would quickly
turn into an infernal sauna…

Hardly that
club opened its doors fans downright snatching off the sparse
merchandise, while Dortmund-based Grunge rockers ::
SOLE
SENTRY :: got ready to enter the stage. It actually
was announced that Layment would support Devin tonight; instead
we got SOLE SENTRY, who got invited just the day before.
However… no matter which band would have opened, it would
have been a difficult task anyway. SOLE SENTRY played a
solid show but the feedback was much restrained. Ok, the blend
of Grunge and Rock was anything than new or spectacular but the
voice of singer Kieron Gerbig I found great. The dudes played
songs from their first demo next to brand new material that hopefully
soon will see the light of day on CD. When the guys bid farewell
and paved ground for Devin some response came up. Well, I hope
SOLE SENTRY at least had fun and left some positive impression
on the one or the other.
Setlist: The Mortal Promise, Mirror Of Soul, Unsuitable,
Reveal, Lose Focus, Place To Hide

Finally the
tiny stage got disenthralled from the doubled equipment and promised
a little bit more room for the :: DEVIN
TOWNSEND PROJECT :: The first rows got very crowded
now by the DEVIN TOWNSEND worshippers, mostly musicians,
who wanted to have a look on the equipment ;) Time has come and
Mr DEVIN TOWNSEND jumped onto stage setting in with the
title-track of his latest record Addicted… with a
turtleneck. Made me sweating just by watching him ;) Right from
the first second on the band was enthusing the fans totally and
they had sooo much fun playing there, as if there was no tomorrow.
The crowd downright freaked out, was screaming and cheering, while
Devin thankfully used the service to pat his face dry. That made
someone utmost happy… ;) Devin was cuddling with the fans,
interacted with the peeps in the first row shoulder on shoulder,
while his fingers spanned 5 frets, playing hellish fast, or he
directly jumped into the crowd. It was sooo amazing. Breathtaking.
Really. Between the songs he was talking, told us little anecdote
or tried to make jokes about Cologne. It was just unbelievable
and we had so much fun too.
Sound was ok, Devins voice a bit too quiet and one of the bass
speakers seemed to have a slack joint. Musically Devin went through
his entire (solo) career with songs back to the 1998 record Infinity.
The DEVIN TOWNSEND PROJECT almost played for one and a
half hours, but for a fan he can play 4 hrs in a row and it won’t
be enough *lol* There are so many songs I would have loved to
see performed live *sighs* And an Anneke van Giersbergen as guest
musician would have been great too (as it happened at the Eindhoven
show)…
Setlist: Addicted, Supercrush, Kingdom, Disruptr, Numbered,
Truth, Om, Deadhead, N9, Earth Day // Color Your World, The Greys,
Deep Peace // Life
What can I
still tell? It was such a fantastic show, definitely a highlight
in 2010 and DEVIN TOWNSEND is God, anyway :) And me is
Addicted!!! ;) Totally. Blown away… ya know.
I only can hope (and pray?) that with the release of the third
record Deconstruction the DEVIN TOWNSEND PROJECT
comes back for a regular club tour :)
