Juliette & The Licks - Waco

2016-04-26 DE – Cologne - Bürgerhaus Stollwerck

 | Doors: 8 pm | Show: 9 pm | Tickets: 22.00 EUR plus fees |

It was in 2009 when I experienced my very first JULIETTE LEWIS show (live report here). And it was the only one for a very long time. Back then she toured Europe without The Licks in support of her solo album Terra Incognita. It was a highly energetic and breathtaking show. It blew me away. Afterwards it really became silent around the Hollywood actress. Early last year first rumors appeared and then they made it official: JULIETTE & THE LICKS have re-united and are back, writing a new album and starting with a live circuit before a new tune even was released. Meanwhile they put a single out, Hello Hero, which sounds great, and started playing shows in Europe too. Seems, JULIETTE & THE LICKS are dying to finally get back on stage again ;) And I know: those, who once have seen a JULIETTE LEWIS show, would love to see her again ;)

Ok, let’s hit the road towards Cologne and the :: Bürgerhaus Stollwerck ::. The show was completely sold out and started unusually late. At 9 pm the support band, London’s :: WACO :: entered the stage. There was not that much space left for the guys and thus there urge to move got limited. Dressed in motley aloha shirts they look like a surfer band. And they guys don’t seem to be sober, especially singer and guitarist Jak Hutchcraft seemed to be in another dimension. And all this with the Rockpalast recording both shows ;) However, „London’s best dressed Punks“ obviously had the fun of life on stage. Musically the show was ok, solid, nothing special, a mixtures of good mood Punks and a proper dash of 70s psychedelic Rock. The crowd acts already wild, to turn them even more up, drummer Welshy treats them one can of beer after another. Successful policy ;)
Setlist: Salem, SE17, Wrangler, Jezebels, Rotten Tooth, Dungeness, Agitation

Right after it got really, really packed and crowded. And hot. Not only mood-wise. :: JULIETTE & THE LICKS :: had hardly entered the stage when all hell broke loose. Dressed in a kind of Superwoman-Rocket-dress, JULIETTE LEWIS started to rampage the stage. She’s like a volcano: unpredictable, erupting with insane power and energy. Coronal mass ejections would look like a candle light next to her. An untamable girl that made her boys look comparatively pale. Ok, It’s hard to match with her. Where does she take all this energy from? I mean, she’s already 42 years old. However, JULIETTE & THE LICKS play songs from all their records, including three new ones from the upcoming album. Fresh, jaunty, groovy, with a proper Punk attitude. Unfortunately, there was no song from Terra Incognita. Instead they played cover versions from Creedence Clearwater Revival and, of course, Prince, who passed away a few days ago totally unexpected. An emotional version of his legendary song Purple Rain was played during the encore. After only 60 minutes playing time the show is over.
All in all it was a great show with a frenetic audience. Unfortunately, light and sound was just average. Even worse was the heedless Rockpalast camera crew in the photo pit that is to blame for a few bruises. I understand they have priority due to the live stream but there is no need for such ruthlessness and aggressiveness.
Setlist: Smash And Grab, Mind Full Of Daggers, Sticky Honey, Any Way You Want, Purgatory Blues, Killer, This I Know, Hello Hero, Got Love To Kill, Proud Mary (Creedence Clearwater Revival cover), I Know Trouble, Get Up // Purple Rain (Prince cover), Hot Kiss, You're Speaking My Language
