Sometimes you need to fall, deeper and deeper, into the abyss, to find yourself and sometimes you get kicked into and might lose yourself. If you would search for a soundtrack to accompany this nightmare, VANHA would serve best.
VANHA is of Finnish language and means "old". And VANHA is the project of Jan Johansson (vocals/guitars/keyboards) that came into existence on one summer’s evening in 2016 solely created to explore the most depressive, darkest and heaviest of sounds. After only two songs he got joined by Jesse Oinas on drums and a half year later a label deal was secured and the debut released. At the darkest time of the year. Literally.
Within The Mist Of Sorrow is atmospheric Doom/Death Metal, pretty old school and much in the veins of early My Dying Bride, even more of Tristania, Sins Of Thy Beloved and Swallow The Sun. I didn’t listen to that kind of music for quite some time, a genre almost forgotten.
Songs and structures are downright classic: heavy but epic guitar walls support deep-throated growls, while discreet piano tunes, synth and a sad violin add emotional overtones.
Out of every accord and every note a wave of desperation, melancholy and sadness arises, piling up meters high, just to break over the listener. The dark heart wails and melts in pain and tears.
Thankfully VANHA don’t use female voices on their record. Instead they vary with occasionally clean vocals as in The Curse, Dark Heart and Desolation or spoken words.
With Within The Mist Of Sorrow VANHA definitely achieved their goal and don’t fall any short of mentioned bands above. This debut is the perfect soundtrack for the emotional apocalypse.
