Jörn:
Hi Chris! You started up with ABSCESS one year before Autopsy
have split up. So what have been the reasons to start ABSCESS?
Chris: Well, Autopsy was splitting up and Danny and
I wanted to keep on playing loud sick brutal music so we formed
ABSCESS straight away. The agreement was for
Autopsy to do one more album and one more show then disband
on good terms, which we did. So for a period Autopsy and ABSCESS
both existed at a same time.
Jörn: In 2006 you’ve signed a record
deal with Tyrant Syndicate, the label of Nocturno Culto and
Fenriz of Darkthrone which is a sublabel of Peaceville Records.
You’ve released all Abscess and Autopsy records through
Peaceville Records all the years before. Why did you leave Peaceville?
Chris: They became disinterested in ABSCESS
after Through The Cracks Of Death
was released so we went where we would be more appreciated and
all worked out well.
Jörn:
Let’s talk about the new CD Horrorhammer! The sound is
still extreme and raw. Didn’t you ever think to realize
an album with a more polished production?
Chris: We are ABSCESS and our sound
is who we are. If people want something overly refined, polished
and inhumanly perfect they can listen someone else‘s album.
We are not afraid to let chaos and raw intensity lead the way.
We will never be boring however, and that‘s a promise!
Jörn: In the past with Autopsy you’ve
got so friendly song titles like Squeal Like A Pig, Necrocannibalistic
Vomitorium or I Shit On Your Grave. And with ABSCESS
there bloody pearls like Suicide Fuck or Tomb Of
The Unknown Junkie. So what about the lyrics on Horrorhammer?
There are song titles like New Diseases. What kind
of diseases do you mean? What kind of literature or movies influences
your lyrical work?
Chris: Actually, these days we pretty much
pull our lyrical ideas from our own twisted heads and rely on
bizarre imagination and all-out disturbing weirdness to make
the lyrics happen. Once in a while some outside inspiration
may set in, but not too often. As for the diseases in question,
whatever you want them to be is what they are, if you‘re
sick enough...
Jörn:
Autopsy and of course ABSCESS have influenced so many extreme
metal bands. You must be very proud of it, right?
Chris: Sure, of course that‘s great to hear...
Cheers, sickoids!
Jörn: I guess you’ve had many problems
with censorship because of your many extreme cover artworks
during your whole career. Does it nerve sometimes or do you
give a fuck? What do you think in general about censorship?
Chris: Actually we‘ve had little trouble
with that... The bit there had been was hyped up a lot and seemed
like more than it was. Of course censorship is lame and cowardly.
What else can I say?
Jörn:
In the past you’ve participated in projects like Murder
Squad or The Ravenous. Will you continue with these projects?
Chris: No plans to do anything with either of those...
They were fun as hell and I love how those records came out.
Jörn: Last year Peaceville Records released
an Autopsy DVD which contains just handycam material. Do you
have any plans do realize an ABSCESS
DVD before this band will die?
Chris: That would be killer and someday that
could happen, but I don‘t think we‘re going away
anytime soon.... Getting something video out while we exist
would be the preferred situation I think.
Jörn:
It’s time for ABSCESS to do a big European tour to promote
Horrorhammer live, hehe! Do the European and especially the
German have a chance to see ABSCESS live this year?
Chris: We‘ll see what the new album brings and
take it from there.
Jörn: I’ve seen on your website
that you’ve listed three bands who have done ABSCESS
cover versions. Do you know the cover of Suicide Fuck
of the Swedish Death Metal band Axis Powers?
Chris: No, but I‘d love to hear it!
Jörn: The last words are yours!
Chris: Keep the horror hammer held high!!!
