There are a lot of bands out today, that have reached a high status without having a lot of talent. So it's a shame, that a lot of people don't know the Mexican DISGORGE, who are for sure, a brilliant band, when it comes to Grindcore. So we decided to support them a bit and talked to the singer and bass player Antimo.

Mephisto: Your band exists since 1994, that's a pretty long time. Other bands became famous and well known in that time, while you are still an underground band. What do you think are the reasons therefore?
Antimo: For us the situation is a bit difficult, because the labels are more interested in well known countries, that have some big Death Metal bands. We also wanted to get a bigger deal and not stay to in the underground only. So we want to leave our label and sign under one, that can push you more as a band, that promotes you and can get you a really big distribution. Unfortunately Repulse doesn't have these possibilities. Our first album was released under a Mexican underground label, so no one here knows about it.

Dunja: So which label would you like to be signed up with?
Antimo: Relapse would be cool!

Mephisto: Now that Black Metal has already made it's way into the charts trough bands like Dimmu Borgir - do you think that Grindcore is the only style left, that's still underground?
Antimo: I think that Grindcore is also a mainstream genre that could reach the masses. There are some bands that are "bigger" already like Exhumed or Nile.

Mephisto: What would you do on the day, that you turn on your TV-set, switch around and when you come to MTV, you see a DISGORGE Video? Would it rather be like "oh nooo, how could this happen??? Aren't we brutal enough anymore?!" or would it more be like "Oh yeah, now we're gonna do a big world tour and kick some poser asses?"
Antimo laughing: That's a tough one. I don't think that a channel like MTV would play a video of us, because our video would include a lot of blood, a lot of meat, guts and everything that has to do with destruction or hate.

Dunja: Maybe they would have done it a few years ago, during "Headbangers Ball" ..
Antimo: But there weren't a lot of videos like this

Mephisto: What would do you define as the essence of Grindcore? Is the only motive to play as fast and brutal as possible, or is there more behind it?
Antimo: I guess it's the feeling of playing extreme music. The main motivation for a lot of bands nowadays is to play faster or harder then anyone else or to act like the most brutal and meanest ones in the whole scene. But for me it's more the feeling. Exhumed aren't so fast or brutal then others, but I think they are one of the best bands in the world. Dunja: Could you imagine to play a different music style, maybe in a side project? Antimo: I do have a side project and it's Death/Black like Angel Corpse or Dark Funeral, some stuff like that.

Mephisto: What kind of music do you listen to at home? Is it the same kind of music, that you play yourself or completely different things?
Antimo: Metal, all kind of Metal. Sometimes I also listen to classic music, but generally I would say Metal. Heavy Metal, Death, Black, everything.

Mephisto: So did you listen to the last Paradise Lost album?
Antimo: No, I don't like that stuff. But I like the bands that most people listen to like Manowar.

Dunja smiling: Hammerfall?
Antimo screaming: NOOO!!!

Mephisto: Which bands influenced your style?
Antimo: If I would tell you all of them, it would need a long time, because it's a very big list. In fact it's brutal and extreme music.

Dunja: No specific bands?
Antimo: Well, the first album of Carcass, Mortician, Slayer, Possessed... all those really aggressive bands.

Dunja: I guess everyone names Slayer when they come up to name their influences.
Antimo: Yeah, Slayer are a cool band!

Mephisto: So Let's go on with another sick question: If Britney Spears would ask you to do a song with her, would you join? And what would this song sound like? Rubber Duck Grindcore?
Antimo laughing: I would know a lot of things with her, but I don't know if they have anything to do with music… (laughing) But it would be cool making something with her.

Dunja: Kill me baby one more time?
Antimo laughing.

Mephisto: Already talking from rubber ducks - do you sing in the shower? And if yeah, which songs are you interpretin' there?
Antimo: I usually don't sing in the shower. I prefer smoking some pot and then take a bath. Wow, that's a great feeling.

Mephisto: What can you tell us about the metal scene in Mexico?
Antimo: There isn't a big scene in Mexico, although there are a lot of bands that play all different metal styles. But there are only a few that I could recommend you, because they deserve attention: Domain, Rottness, Anarcus, Cenotaph… There are also other bands that play another style, like melodic Metal and shit like that…

Dunja smiling: Shit?
Antimo: Ähm… Stuff like that. I don't like it too much.

Mephisto: So about your government? Do you have problems with them?
Antimo: Now we don't have any, but we used to have some problems. Some time ago we used a lot of blood during our live shows. We want to express our concept in the live shows as well and one time someone informed the government so some policemen came to our show and told us that we could be in jail for the things we do. It was really shitty, but we don't have these kind of problems anymore.

Mephisto: What do you want to express with your lyrics and what do they mean to you?
Antimo: Our lyrics have a lot of pathological content, but it's not only talking about infections or diseases, there are some more personal things, personal thoughts about death and everything that has to do with it, with violent death, Sadism and Cruelty. These are the main views I have in the lyrics.

Mephisto: You know the development in the metal scene - it's more and more splitting up into different genres and the fan bases are more and more getting in conflicts with each other. What is your opinion about this development? Shouldn't it more be like that all metallers stand together against all that dancefloor shit??
Antimo: I don't know. I think the metal was created to be Metal, with bass, drums and a guitar. So I don't like it, when a band uses keyboards, except of some bands, who really know how to use this instrument and how to mix it with the music. So I don't like it, when Metal is mixed up with goth or techno, because for me Metal has to be raw, aggressive and, you know, mean!

Mephisto: What do you expect for the future?
Antimo: We want to continue touring and releasing records. We will release some split CDs in a few months and in the start of next year we will record our third album, so I hope that we can go on touring again in Europe and maybe also in the USA.

Dunja: So how is this tour going on?
Antimo: Really cool! This is our last day.

Dunja: But unfortunately there aren't a lot of people here today…
Antimo: Generally there aren't a lot of people, but for us it's really great to play here.

Dunja: So it's your first time in here?
Antimo: Yeah, it's our first time.

Mephisto: How did it actually come that you play in here? Did your label finance it, or do you pay it by yourself?
Antimo: No, the label paid nothing, that's another reason why we are a bit disappointed. The idea came from Martin, the bassist of Sanatorium. One year ago he proposed us, to do this tour with them, and we had some problems with the papers so we couldn't come for one year, but now we are here and he pays for our tickets and stuff. That's also a reason why we want to find another label, because we look for support when we are touring.

Mephisto: I guess that's a general problem, because Grindcore isn't that popular.

Dunja: Also Rebaellium paid their tour by themselves.
Antimo: That's really shitty. But for us it's a big thing to be here, you know, Martin has paid and arranged everything for us. Paying by ourselves is the only possibility for us to play in Europe. So next year we want to change our label and I really hope that we can sign with Relapse.

Mephisto: Good luck with that!
Antimo: Thanks! You know our second album will be licensed under Dead Vomit Records, which is a division of Necropolis and I hope that we can be there, because it's a licence only yet, they will release the US Version in June.

Mephisto: The last big words to the Nocturnal Hall Readers?
Antimo: Thank you very much for making this interview! Keep supporting your scene!
