Four years have passed since Poland’s finest INDUKTI released their debut S.U.S.A.R. Now it’s time for their sophomore entitled Idmen. Did once Riverside’s Mariusz Duda the job behind the micro, are there now three singers sharing singing duties. That brings out the instrumental intention and musical collective much better and caters for variety at the same time. But the biggest part is reserved for the instrumental parts on this excellent album. It’s a thrilling piece. Reason enough to get deeper into INDUKTI. The friendly answers were given by Ewa Jablonska, the girl with the violin.

Jochen: Four years are gone since you’ve published S.U.S.A.R. What have you done in the meantime?
Ewa:
We were composing material for second album, welcoming new INDUKTI babies, working with new bass player, and having fun traveling with live shows on festivals from Mexico to Lithuania.

Jochen: How much time you needed for the production of Idmen?
Ewa:
I know that it looks like it took us one and half of the year to record and produce Idmen, but if we take time that we factually spent in studio it would be about two or three months. We had to fit dates and schedules with our guests, we needed to wait for tracks from vocalists, 'coz we weren't able to invite them to record in the same studio as we did. So it took much time. But I think the result was worth waiting.

Jochen: The titles of your records are very cryptic. What does Idmen mean? I've only found a reference to a Greek verse in a poem by Ezra Pound.
Ewa:
Yes, Idmen is an old Greek word, taken from the Odyssey by Homer. It's the word sang by the Sirens and can be translated as: “we've seen, we know”. As many musicians we express ourselves by music, so you can treat Idmen as our sight of reality. The main theme of is struggling and you can find here whole spectrum: fight with faith, destiny, self-esteem, etc. Though listening to it you become one of the witnesses of this. You are able to say: “I've seen. I know”.

Jochen: There are three (guest) singers working on your new album. Why you decided for three?
Ewa:
As instrumental band we knew that we can't have more than half of the album with vocals. So we picked three songs and we gave them to vocalists. Actually, they couldn't choose which track they would sing. We decided to have different vocalist on each song by two reasons:
First of all we couldn't imagine anyone else to sing those tracks, and second of all we didn't want anybody to think that we have found the regular vocalist. We still remain the instrumental band.

Jochen: Despite his impressive collaboration on S.U.S.A.R., Mariusz Duda takes no part in Idmen anymore. Can you tell me why?
Ewa:
Well, I think Mariusz perfectly matched our debut album, but this time we wanted something new and more insane. Music on Idmen is different, more heavy and mad. Besides, as I said, we don't want to be linked to any specific vocalist, and inviting Mariusz second time could evoke thoughts that we are on the band together. Furthermore we consummate our music friendship on some other fields. For example, our drummer, Wawrzyniec Dramowicz, was one of the guests on Mariusz's solo album Lunatic Soul.

Jochen: The individual quality of each of your singers is very impressive. How do you find your most wanted vocalists? And did they give you an enthusiastic Okay immediately?
Ewa:
Usually we find them by listening to new bands. We met Mariusz on Riverside's concert in Warsaw in 2003 or 2002. Both bands, INDUKTI and Riverside, hadn't published debut albums yet. The same story was with Taff, we know each other for many years now, (there was the time, that we shared same rehearsal room with his band Rootwater ;)) Foreign guests we usually meet on live shows we play together. Two years ago we supported SGM on their Warsaw show. We met Nils personally and after few months I asked him to sing on our album. He agreed immediately, just as rest of our guest singers, by the way ;)

Jochen: Have you ever had the idea to record a pure instrumental album?
Ewa:
No, but someday... maybe… ;) But for now, you can combine full instrumental album from Idmen and Mutum EP on which you can find instrumental versions of three tracks that are sang on Idmen.

Jochen: Your music seems to be very consistent within itself, but it has many influences and forms of expression. What ties in my opinion is the highly energetic flow that permeates your music. Do all band members participate in song-writing and the progression of your music? Is there generally a common sense in which direction the current song - or one step beyond, the whole album should go?
Ewa:
All INDUKTI members participate in process of composing. We use some ready riffs or themes brought by guitarists or drummer, but then we work on it together, we improvise, play it till it's ready. This way of composing needs special flow to be effective. Sometimes we try to provoke it by repeating themes as a mantra and sometimes we just need to wait till it comes. But we know that it's worth waiting.

Jochen: In recent years, Poland is something like a melting pot for a lot of excellent musicians and bands, especially in Progressive/Art Rock and the peripheral areas. Whether Collage/Satellite, Riverside or INDUKTI, there is much going on in the state of Poland. Is there an explanation for this growing significance in modern Polish music?
Ewa:
Maybe something in the water? ;) Seriously, I think there always were many talented and unique bands in Poland, but they simply didn't have communication channels. Now, we are in much more comfortable situation, we have Myspace and lots of other ways you can present your art activity.

Jochen: Does an affiliated music scene in Poland exist?
Ewa:
You mean, like festivals, or scenes for progressive bands that are outside the main scene? Yes, for example, this year we played on Ino Rock Festival, a new progressive event. We hope it will transform into big important venue in Poland.

Jochen: Do you already have any plans for record No. 3? Or do we have to wait again for several years?
Ewa:
Yes, we have some themes to work on, but now we have to focus on some other things. More private, we are going to have another baby in our INDUKTI family ;) But we have ideas and we plan to work some other way, by using internet and software that could enable us to work at home.

Jochen: What’s about live performances? Are there any plans for visiting Germany?
Ewa:
We have performed in Germany few times and always it was great experience. Fantastic audience :) So, we hope to have opportunity to come and play some more, we would love to come.

Jochen: And now, at last, some spontaneous answers on some short questions lying by the way, please. Your favorite musicians?
Ewa:
David Cross, Carla Kihlstedt, John Greenwood, Thom York, duet UNKLE, Mike Patton
Jochen: What do you dislike on the current music scene?
Ewa:
Copying, way of thinking, that when you feel insecure with your message you hide behind copying someone else who become successful.
Jochen: What do you like on your fellow musicians?
Ewa:
Twisted sense of humor and the fact that each of them is unique
Jochen: Does an ideal vocalist exist for singing all of your songs?
Ewa:
I'm afraid there's no such person… Mike Patton maybe
Jochen: What’s your highlights in music in the last time?
Ewa:
Devil Doll, UNKLE, Proposition soundtrack by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis
Jochen: Personal highlights?
Ewa:
My sweet devil kitten :P

Jochen: Thanks for the interview; I wish you a lot of fun and success!
Ewa:
Thanks a lot! :)
