Leo: Congratulations
for Scars: Incomplete, the album of the month in March
at Nocturnal Hall deservedly! How the hell do you get such stunning
ideas?
Wolfgang: Hello Leo! Thanks for compliments - I compose
with a lot of emotion I would say!
Leo: Where
do you compose music for IN SLUMBER?
Wolfgang: I only compose at home, because I am left
alone and I can concentrate better. I must be alone and in accordant
emotional condition to find new ideas.
Leo: The
lyrical concept of your first album Stillborn Rebirth
was really appealing. Which contents does Scars: Incomplete
handle?
Wolfgang: The lyrical draft contains the dedication
to self-injury. I have a soft spot for the pathetic meaning
in it. The different motives hiding behind are really burdensome!
I try to formulate that not in dull manner, but more noble,
emotional and spiritual. The tragedy arranged behind has got
delightful and liberating aspects. Hate and love in a transcendental
world, expressed lyrically – that’s more emotional
for me!
Leo: Do you
treat with negative/positive experiences in your live through
music?
Wolfgang: Yes, I work up negative records through music,
because all my feelings are more intense and honest while working
on new songs! There is no place for positive researches –
I would not have enough subjects for a whole album!
Leo: Your
voice sounds very variable on the new record. Do you practice
singing? How often do rehearsals take place?
Wolfgang: We rehearse two times a week with IN
SLUMBER. I do not really train my voice, I scream emotionally,
but I am going to start singing during the rehearsals to use
my voice really variably for the next album.
Leo: Is it
difficult to cooperate with you in your opinion? Are you open
for compromises or don’t you rather give an inch?
Wolfgang: Haha, you should ask my band colleagues about
that, but from my point of view I am willing for agreements.
If I do not like musical proposals, I would not argue against
them by hook or by crook, but I try to get my way with other
musical solutions. It is more important that all musicians stand
for every single song proudly.
Leo: How
does a normal day in the life of a busy music genie look like?
Wolfgang: Hmmm, I go to work at 6.45 a.m. and I return
approximately at 4 p.m. to 4.30.p.m, I turn on the computer
and try to realize the ideas which came up during my work. I
drink one beer conveniently. I work on older ideas if I don’t
come up with new ones – or I continue writing my lyrics;
in between I get myself something to eat. Afterwards it is time
for rehearsing (normally at 7 p.m.) for at least 3 hours. I
return to home then, drink another beer and work on ideas or
write on with my lyrics. The time I do not have any more inspiration,
I switch on TV and let the day unwind easefully. Sometimes I
meet my friends in the city to have some beers and to speak
about the one or other problem, if a rehearsal has been cancelled.
Leo: You
are involved in many other bands and projects. Do other factors
suffer from these manifold activities?
Wolfgang: Unfortunately this is true, yes! All the
other factors are musical projects in turn, hehe! I would be
happy, if there would be less work from time to time, but…the
heck with it!
Leo: Did you like the collaboration with the Eisblut
musicians? Is there something planned for the future?
Wolfgang: That was cool - of course it was advantageous
that I know the guys for quite a while. It was a lot of fun
to scribe a project with other guys, where I am not the main
song writer! We work on a sequel.
Leo: What
do expect from Massacre Records?
Wolfgang: I demand that they support IN SLUMBER
at best. The collaboration works like a charm and I confide
in these guys working at Massacre Rec. In the end it
is deciding that we find a good position on the European market.
Leo: Where
do you want to stand on the ladder of success in ten years?
Wolfgang: Hmmm…I want to look back on an insane
period of time together with my band mates – it is only
second-rank where I am positioned on the ladder of success,
but it would be great to be further upstairs. I want to do some
touring across Europe and I try to record some good albums,
because I want that IN SLUMBER gets successful!
Leo: Are
concerts of an important significance for you?
Wolfgang: Concerts are very important for me to let
off steam. I am glad if the auditory experiences something outstanding
together with the band to flee from everyday life.
Leo: Is it
a kind of metamorphosis on stage to bring out a different aspect
of your personality?
Wolfgang: I am a rather introvert person and I relish
to scream out all my thoughts and emotions on stage with the
help of musical backing! So I transform in a particular way!
I feel more free and vital when screaming out all my hate.
Leo: I visited
your latest concert with Third Moon in your hometown Linz together
with 300 fans. What do you think about the scene’s force
in (Upper) Austria?
Wolfgang: I consider the scene to be relatively strong
and the scene got better in Austria in general. There are a
lot of interesting and new bands here to be proud of. We will
hear about them for sure.
Leo: Concerning
the latest show, it was impelling, as you put away the guitar
for a song to concentrate on the vocals for a while. The contact
with the fans got intensified. Would this be an option for the
future to evolve into a more tangible front man?
Wolfgang: That’s exactly the reason why I am
not an IN SLUMBER guitarist. Consequently I
can act out more emotionally. Let’s see, but I think I
will put away my guitar from time to time in Third Moon for
one or two songs.
Leo: Do you
listen to music at home? Which way do you prefer?
Wolfgang: I do not have the time to listen to music
at home. The direction has not changed since the age of 13.
I love this Old School Death Metal stuff, though I try to find
and live my own expression.
Leo: Do you
judge the internet as positive or do you rather suffer damages?
Wolfgang: I personally think that it is positive and
helpful, because young bands get the chance to present themselves
world wide.
Leo: Do you
continue the Scars: Incomplete?
Wolfgang: We are looking forward to be on stage whenever
it is possible and to promote our actual album Scars: Incomplete!
I will prepare for the next release slow-going!
Leo: Just
imagine following situation: a music fan sees through all new
releases and wants to purchase only one album. Why does he grab
IN SLUMBER’s CD calculatedly?
Wolfgang: …because he experienced IN
SLUMBER live on stage – and he was able to identify
with the music of IN SLUMBER. I personally
hope that not only one music lover but lots more will do that,
haha!
Leo: Is there
anything left we did not mention and you want to add implicitly?
Wolfgang: I want to say thank you to all, who took
the time to read till here. Please visit our page www.myspace.com/inslumber
or www.inslumber.com.
Stay Metal!
