Hailing from Rome, Italy, NEVERDREAM have released their debut album around one year ago. The unusual topic of Christiane F. (Autobiography Of A Girl Of The Streets And Heroin Addict) as well as many complaisant up to great reviews downright demand an interview with these friendly musicians. Good humored bassist Federico and drumming lyricist Gabriele answered all questions about past, present and future…

Neverdream

Jochen: Congrats on your first full-length cHristiane F. cHemical FaitH. I think it’s not perfect but I absolutely like it and it is definitely a good beginning. How are you doing these days? As there was to read you guys are back in the studio for the pre-productions of your sophomore…
Federico:
Thanks a lot; we also think Chemical Faith was a great beginning! Obviously with Souls, our next record, everything is going to change. Just in these days we came back in studio and Gabriele is recording his drums parts! We’re all excited! Everything is going according our plans, and we’re thinking about introducing our new record officially on March 2008 right in Germany.

Jochen: What I want to know first - ok, it’s quite obvious - how does it come that an Italian band dedicates a concept album to Christiane F. and the lost kids of “Bahnhof Zoo”?
Federico:
Our drummer Gabriele had got the idea after reading the book and after seeing the film, then he proposed this idea to the other members of the band and we immediately liked it. Every one of us already knew the film so it was easy to make a choice just because of the intensity conveyed by the story and by the words used in the book, the subject dealt, the feelings coming out... You have to know that every time we met each other in the studio to rehearse we had in the room showing the film Christiane F. on repeat, suffused with light: such an atmosphere…

Jochen: Are you in touch with her? Does she know about your album? You already got any feedback from her?
Federico:
No, unfortunately not. I confess you that the idea of contacting Christiane would have been great, mostly to know her opinion about the concept. Even to contact the director of the film was in our intentions, seen and considered that we practically set his film to music.

Jochen: How was the response so far on cHristiane F. cHemical FaitH? What I have seen, most ratings are above average :) Did you expect such feedback?
Federico:
They were all very good responses, put in so good words for us. We knew our disc was a great work and in fact we hoped to read good reviews, and so it has been.

Jochen: Any chance to land a deal or distro for it or future releases?
Federico:
We’re considering different things. For sure now, the most important thing is coming back in the studio and recording the new album. Once finished the recording, it will be something different. We’re sure of it.

Jochen: With Fabrizio Dottoris you have a guest saxophonist on cHristiane F. cHemical FaitH who adds a very own note. On the German NEVERDREAM site there is to read that Fabrizio is now a permanent member… So we can look forward to get more sax tunes in the near future?
Federico:
We already met Fabrizio for having worked with him in some other projects. At the beginning the idea was just to have some sax supply in Chemical Faith, and then because of the great result, we decided to integrate Fabrizio in the band. But this is not the only reason: Fabrizio is a well-qualified musician, and besides he even helps us in live concerts with keyboards, programming and backing vocals.

Jochen: Btw… it’s quite unusual to have a saxophonist on a metal album…
Federico:
Yes, we know it’s rather unusual to have a sax in a metal band, but we immediately want to avoid any misunderstanding: NEVERDREAM is a band composed by guys loving music, very good tunes, arrangements, who loves to convey true feelings over all. So if at a right moment we feel that a sax supply could be useful, for sure we don’t really matter to be out of the classical standard of the music genre. We think instead this could be original.

Jochen: …what leads me to the next question: I mean… especially the fact that you break with “metal standards” makes your music so exciting. Will you go on with the tightrope walk? Or will you gonna take the safe path, taking a step back again to please die-hard metal heads on the next one?
Gabriele:
The sound of the new album will be something more particular than in Chemical Faith, it has more acid resonances, and electronic parts both like sounds choices and like harmonious and melodic choices. And at the same time it’s more powerful and metal than the previous…If I have to be honest, Souls won’t be of course a safe path album because of the variety of the influences used, and of course it won’t be an album to appreciate just at the first listening.

Jochen: The next record will be entitled Souls 26 April 1986. Sounds like another concept album? About Chernobyl? Anything you already would like to reveal about it? What we can expect?
Federico:
Yes, the next album called right Souls, will be a concept album about the Chernobyl event. And just because of the subject will be treated and interpreted the relation between mankind and nature, and in the second part will be narrated the suffering, the tears of a man who has lost his family… What you’ll have to wait for? A huge amount of riffs, effect tunes, very good arrangements, more elaborate progressive parts, dark and psychedelic atmospheres, and all these aspects rose to the nth power! In a full NEVERDREAM style!

Jochen: It seems like you are generally pursuing a superior concept, like to describe special decades musically, something like David Pearce does with his thrillers in a lyrical way… If so, please tell us more about it ;)
Federico:
Gabriele has had this idea after the release of Chemical Faith, make concept
album that talk about the sore of humanity in the time. Seventies for the drugs, eighties for the nuclear etc… I don't tell you nothing for the other concept albums obviously (ah ah ah)!
We will make an album for every decades starting from the years 40 up to the twentieth century. This to tell the seven capital sins in our way, not telling those imposed by the “Catholic church”.

Jochen: Founded back in 2000 you are still a young band. So I guess you can’t live on your music yet. Who has enslaved you in your real life and how to get job and passion under one roof?
Federico:
Yes, we are a quite young band, and you absolutely are right when you say we can’t live only of our music. We are normal guys who live their lives not just on dreams but even thanks to their jobs. Of course music is our biggest passion and we sacrifice us for the band, with a lot of pleasures and such humbleness. We believe at all in NEVERDREAM, we know it’s a dream could live only by our music, but in our opinion dreams are good for health “ah ah ah”. And moreover you have to trust one day dreams will became truth.

Jochen: You only played one show in Germany, of course in Berlin. Any plans to tour other German cities with the second record?
Federico:
Ye, we only came in Germany with full Chemical Faith show one time, exactly in Berlin, even because the show in Aalen was erased. We’re working to have some dates in Germany next year as soon as the new album will be released. By the way I already can confirm you that we for sure will play in Stoccarda at RockFabrik together with other bands known in Germany. And if everything will go in the best way, it will be followed by a little tour of ten dates, all in Germany… Keep on listening for the news! We definitely want to come back to Germany because we spent such a great time and so we’re going to prepare some explosives shows.

Jochen: Thank you much for spending time on answering these entire questions :) If there is anything left I forgot to ask or you still want to tell us, now you can do ;)
Federico:
Thank you and thanks to Nocturnal Hall for the time allowed us. I don’t think we both have forgotten something, or at least I hope so… By the way, if you want, we wait all of you guys on March in Germany and keep you informed on our space www.myspace.com/neverdreamband and on our German site www.neverdream.de, which will be soon updated with a new graphic and translated in German, English, and Italian. See you soon guys!!!
