FIELDS
OF THE NEPHILIM are unquestionably one of the most influencing
Gothic Rock bands in the scene. Their unique appearance on and
off stage with wide-brimmed hats, dusty clothes and long duster
coats as well as cowboy boots became its trade mark, a fusion
of a Sergio Leone Western and a post-nuclear apocalyptic scenario,
lyrically embracing the occult, the dark, aspects of chaos, magic,
shamanism and the Nephilim legend. Having released 3 records in
the 80s, it afterwards took 15 years for the fourth one, and since
then nothing new was put out, though Carl McCoy and his mates
every now and then appear on festivals and small tours that eventually
resulted in a long time announced live DVD/CD box-set entitled
Ceromonies (Ad Mortem Ad Vitam), worth to be promoted
with a small tour through Germany. As I just saw FIELDS OF
THE NEPHILIM once (headlining the Amphi Festival in 2009)
I was much curious and looking forward to this intimate club show
:)

Although Muenster-based
Gothic rockers :: BURN
:: supported all German dates there was no announcement
made. I just learnt about it on my way towards the •
X Club
•. Too bad, as I think that some promotion for BURN
would not have done any harm either. However, I saw BURN performing
live only once opening the Blackfield Festival last year and this
show was… unimposing, due to technical problems and bad
weather. Meanwhile BURN unflinchingly went towards its
own path, entering the next level, releasing its sophomore Black
Magnolia and playing their butts off live. And yes, it
all has paid off. What I got to see and to listen to tonight was
like a completely changed band. BURN performed highly energetic
and vibrant, while singer Felix was effervescent in his announcements
and acting. Also sound and singing was great. BURN indeed
has much improved. It was the crowd that obviously could not deal
with so much energy on a Sunday evening and responded quite lame.
But at the end BURN got them and finally there were some
hands in the air. I guess to support Fields Of The Nephilim with
an own 45 minutes show is quite a chance for BURN. Well
done guys!

During the
change-over the X filled up a little bit more seeing the fans
step down from the bar. Expectations regarding the number of attendees
have been different but I would say organizers can be satisfied,
as the X was well-filled. It did not take arm-twisting to get
:: FIELDS
OF THE NEPHILIM :: on stage. Shroud (Exordium)
immediately built up a great atmosphere, luckily with not so much
smoke on stage, and left the crowd thrilled and waiting for Carl
McCoy who then finally appeared out of the smoke under vehement
applause. But it seemed that this already exhausted the audience’s
enthusiasm as the interaction and communication from the band’s
side was equal to zero. There was only one guy (with an EBM tee)
that tried to build up a pyramid. FIELDS OF THE NEPHILIM
of course tried to be as cool as fuck, no visible emotion, but
I’m pretty sure that I could see a hint of a smile every
now and then on McCoy’s face ;) Sound meanwhile turned to
the worse and was unpleasing loud. To outweigh this there was
enough light. Regarding the setlist there was no real surprise.
FIELDS OF THE NEPHILIM played a 60 minutes best-of set
through 3 of their four full-length (Elizium was
cut out). With the encore they made it up to 70 minutes. For a
headlining anniversary a bit too short if you ask me. But I do
not want to nag; all in all it was a great show and really a nice
evening. To see these guys in a club has definitely its charm
;)
