Obscura - Beneath The Massacre - Defiled

2011-05-21 DE – Essen - Turock

Hardly to explain what goes on when HATE ETERNAL come over for some shows ;) Maybe it’s Erik Rutan, the master himself, maybe it is because you just need to clear your mind every now and then. For latter reason HATE ETERNAL is the perfect treatment. They are so brutal and fast… it’s like to face an ICE. Head-on…

After just one day off I’m back at lovely Turock club to have a relaxing evening. :: DEFILED :: get first onto stage tonight and so downright kick ass. It’s the very last day on tour and it seems these Japanese cats didn’t suffer that much from the usual stress. They are as lively, chirpy and happy as a sandboy. Axe-man Yusuke Sumita takes over the talks and can’t stop saying thank you to fans and bands for having had such a great time on tour. If you keep in mind what’s still going on in Japan it even weights twice. In fact DEFILED have been absent from the scene for 8 years. Now they are back with a new album (In Crisis) and new line-up and ready to rock Europe. Musically I’d say they still walk these disharmonious and sort of scatterbrained paths, but they do so with so much energy and enthusiasm that it is a real pleasure watching them playing live. Bass-player Haruhisa Takahata is so damn hot and drummer Takahiro Okada gets his memorable appearance later this evening ;) Huge entertaining factor! ;)

Next up are Canadian Tech-Death-Core metallers :: BENEATH THE MASSACRE :: Live they are truly a force. The crowd is a little bit picky and changes. However, fronter Elliot Desgagnés is likewise in best mood and gets close to the first row, while the string-army piles up aggression. Short, heavy and painful *laughs*

Now it’s up to :: OBSCURA :: to take over the reign. I was curious, because I didn’t see them playing live so far. At least not in this combination. I for sure saw Necrophagist in the past, Pestilence too… ;) OBSCURA also just released a new album, entitled Omnivium. It’s their third in a five, six years spanning career. So they are not in a hurry and instead focus on quality and great musicianship. I now expected some highly skilled guitar work; well they did, but not with that arrogant attitude, more totally relaxed like it’s the most normal thing and not worth to mention. Really cool. Amazing to be exactly ;) I just found the show pretty short for a co-headliner. Hmm…
Setlist: Intro, Septuagint, Vortex Omnivium, The Anticosmic Overload, Universe Momentum, Ocean Gateways, Euclidean Elements, Centric Flow, Incarnated

Finally! Erik Rutan himself gets his equipment up and enjoys the attention of the fans. Lights out, the ICE arrives, with full force. :: HATE ETERNAL :: kick off with intro and Eternal Ruler from the brand new album Phoenix Amongst The Ashes, unleashed a few days ago and nail everything and everyone right on the wall. Everything gets blown up! Hell yes! HATE ETERNAL go through their entire history, always at full speed and fans totally freak out, mosh, headbang, run circles and surf the crowd. I get pushed around, collect bruises and ultimately someone crushes into my back, but hey, the cam is still alive and working ;) Also the guys on stage have fun, although Erik is looking over his shoulder every now and then, sensing that there is something going on ;) And yes… the ill shows up *lol* As already mentioned it’s the very show on tour. At King Of All Kings the guys from Defiled and Beneath The Massacre enter the stage with these Burger King crowns on their heads and turn the Turock upside down. Hahahaha… what fun. What weirdness and ferocity. Luckily I have then Elliot Desgagnés and Christopher Bradley on each side so that I survive this trip more or less without wounds ;)
Afterwards I feel totally… steamrolled *laughs* But I feel great... sort of balanced. Hahahaha… that was exactly the right treatment for this night. I was so in need of some decent brutality.
Anyway, it was a great show. Sound could have been better, lights too, but hey, what counts is the music and the entertainment, right? Thumbs up! Erik also removes his equipment again, all other band members hang out with fans and friends and party.
Setlist (is not exactly the one from the Essen show but should be similar ;)): Rebirth, Eternal Ruler, Thorns Of Acacia, Behold Judas, Lake Ablaze, Bringer Of Storms, Haunting Abound Catacombs, Phoenix Amongst The Ashes, By His Own Decree, The Art Of Redemption, Servants Of The Gods, Powers That Be, I, Monarch, Tombeau, King Of All Kings
