2010-02-16 AT – Graz - Orpheum

It has been a while since the last metal concert took place in the best Styrian location called Orpheum! The hall is well known for its good sound and the build-up like a theatre cares for best sight on stage from each place. Today the program consists of Death Metal from Finland and Sweden. A few hundred fans came to bow before one of the masters of Death Metal: Peter Tägtgren and his horde HYPOCRISY! The expectations are enormous because of the anticipating setlist and the egregious new album entitled A Taste Of Extreme Divinity.

SURVIVORS ZERO – had to wake up during the first half

The clock stroke eight and the Finns known as :: SURVIVORS ZERO :: started their set in front of a handful of Death Metal maniacs. Thereby it was obvious that the guys, who showed up in good mood, had to play a few songs to get really started. The catchy groove and a few guitar delicacies cared for the audience’s convenience of the mixture consisting of 95 % Death and 5 % Thrash Metal. From the middle of the program on, the vocalist contacted the fans and the band performed in more extrovert manner. In addition, the cover version of Kreator’s tune People Of The Lie contributed a lot to the loud applause. Neck-breakers like Scavengers Of Christ or Reclaim My Heritage boosted the sentiment, though the songs miss out a certain hymnal character despite of nice guitar leads and melodies. In all, the performance was motivated and warmed up the crowd.

HYPOCRISY – Let Death Metal Do The Talking

The first seconds of the intro and the following opener of the latest effort unleashed a real firework – a gorgeous sound and a well chosen program guaranteed for an outstanding concert. I liked the felicitous performance of all different albums excluding Catch 22 ;) Singer and mastermind Peter Tägtgren had to grin because of some “Pedaaa, Pedaaaa”-shouts and thanked for the support with a heavy portion of Death Metal. The speed oftentimes changed and formed hefty contrasts – the band opened with the brand new songs Valley Of The Damned and Hang Him High and throttled the tempo with the classic Fractured Millenium. Adjusting The Sun cared for more heaviness, ere the irresistible hit Eraser enjoyed the listener’s heart and ears with an incredible refrain. The addicts of cudgeling got their portion with the medley of Pleasure Of Molestation/Osculum Obscenum/ Penetralia. :: HYPOCRISY :: managed to perform the sentiments of the different albums in best manner and therefore they sounded enormously eerie while playing the throttled tracks Apocalypse and The 4th Dimension. The brutal Killing Art unleashed hell, ere the likers of melodies listened closer during A Coming Race and Fire In The Sky (the symphonic interplay aroused goose pimps all over!); the middle paced Let The Knife Do The Talking or The Final Chapter took out speed felicitously concerning dramaturgy to boost the penetrating effect of faster songs like Weed Out The Weak or the all-time classic Roswell 47. Master Tägtgren performed with intense vocals and good humor, the 90 minutes of entertaining Death Metal were additionally based on the impelling drums of Horgh or Mikael’s bass play; the second guitarist Tomas cared for a full and transparent sound. There was only a slight deficit despite the euphoric reactions: the show seemed to be a little bit too professional and way too cool, but that’s all I have to criticize; I thank Peda and HYPOCRISY for this intense heavy evening!
