GERILJA

2008-04-10 DE – Cologne - Luxor

Certifiably Insane

It happened anytime last year when I stumbled over the myspace site of American craziest freak commando known as MINDLESS SELF INDULGENCE. And I fell in love. In early 2008 the band’s first DVD Our Pain Your Gain landed right on me desk and I was downright blown away! Geeez… I wouldn’t have expected such a show! Of course I was jumping at shortly afterwards announced shows like a lunatic. With luck ;) More or less…
If the show in Cologne would turn out just a little the way I experienced on this DVD, then it was supposed to be a fucking hell of a show! ;)
Together with Dani from Reflections Of Darkness Magazine we headed for the Luxor (formerly known as Prime Club) in Cologne’s city, just to lose our way (Cologne so sucks in terms of traffic) again. Never mind, there was enough time left and we didn’t differ that much ;) Ok, it was my first stint at Luxor, a small and drawn-out club, similar to the Matrix in Bochum and with around 500 people more than just sold out and thus crowded out. If you didn’t take your place immediately, you didn’t have any chance afterwards with the show beginning.

Dandies In The Underworld

Show kicked off unusually late, at 9pm, but well, there were only to bands on the bill. It was up to :: GERILJA :: to heat up the crowd. Hailing from Norway this band caused some confusion, since there is another Norwegian band with the same name but playing politically correct Hardcore stuff. The GERILJA cats we are talking about right here are quite mysterious. There is not that much to learn about them. And visually this trio doesn’t has ANYTHING to do with the Hardcore guys *lol* While you can describe the cutie bass player Simon and drummer Ottar “normal looking” gents, singer and guitarist Alex seemed to be beamed right out of the hippy end-sixties, wearing zebra leggings, a head- and arm bands and a get-me-laid-muscle-shirt. Bathed in screaming pink lights they played some kind of psychedelic-touched, Punk splattered Rock with some spacy samples added every now and then. It reminded me a bit of T-Rex, just with less Glam and guitar power. And that’s exactly what this band is lacking of. The right kick, power, pizazz… ya know. Show was quite tame and so the feedback was. Except for the last announced track… seeing the fans already screaming for MSI…
Setlist: White L, The Night, Disco Shakedown, Rad P. Masters Of The Universe, Neon Sphere, Heat, P.S.

Industrial Jungle Pussy Punk Deluxe

The New York freaks meanwhile took it easy, didn’t rush about anything. Time passed by, waves of pushing bodies led to optimizing crowd compression with the first girl passing out. She was really a die-hard fan, recovered for a while in the photo pit and jumped back to her place filling her dot in the human lattice. Finally :: MINDLESS SELF INDULGENCE :: entered the stage with fronter Jimmy Urine sharing Katjes and Haribo and an axeman wanting to have his shoe in my face (2mm I tell ya *g*). Seems like he doesn’t like photographers, Jimmy does neither… he got a colleague on stage to take photos from the crowd, backbiting about the results. Fuck, who cares, get the show going! And so it happened. With the classic Shut Me Up MINDLESS SELF INDULGENCE accelerated from 0 to 100 in less than a second, going mad with the crowd completely freakin’ out („you’re so classy… you’re so a fucking classy audience…“). 100% energy, 100% pure madness, over the entire running time. Here I exactly experienced what I have seen on DVD. 1:1. Jimmy Urine was in best shape, also vocally, jumping, climbing at and upon things, still giving away candy, surfed the crowd, kissed and licked the fans in the first row, while fooling them with poignant sarcasm at the same time. Stupidly peeps didn’t realize what he was saying (or wasn’t able to speak English) and just screamed in return brainpower-free. Bass-wonder-woman Lyn-Z didn’t fall short any bit, likewise jumping, crowd surfing and lovely twisting herself. Steve Righ? acted the all-destroying evil man, while drummer Kitty had fun with Jimmy doing gyms on her clearly arranged drum kit. Mood on both sides was pushed to the extreme. Just unbelievable! Micro-stands and monitor speakers were thrown around (no guitars shredded) and a micro sold for 20 Euros by Jimmy. He also created a YouTube-Hello-from-Cologne-message with the fans sending it to himself and splashed with margarine, grabbing at everybody’s nose with his buttered hands *laughs*, while lost shoes were going around. Jimmy Urine managed to get out the best of every situation, of course on the most provocative way ;)
Beside of the proven best-of set MSI also played six songs of the brand new album If to be released on April 29. All these songs can already be checked out on the band’s myspace site. Generally speaking classics such as Shut Me Up, Stupid MF and Straight To Video for example went down much better with the crowd singing along. Fans first need to get used to the new ones. And fortunately MSI are live much heavier than on CD, where I find them always too smooth and edgeless.
However, what a fucking freaking AMAZING show! Couldn’t have been any better. Just way too short! With more than 20 songs they just played for only 75 minutes :( „That’s the most important part for a band, leaving backstage for hot girls, drugs and sex and you shout M S I…”
Setlist: Shut Me Up, Mastermind, Clarissa, Stupid MF, 1989, Never Wanted To Dance, Kill The Rock, Prescription, Revenge, Animal, Tornado, Pay For It, Faggot, Capitol P, Bitches, Dicks Are For My Friends, Golden I, What Do They Know // Planet Of The Apes, Straight To Video, I Hate Jimmy Page

I LOVE MSI! Whenever possible, MINDLESS SELF INDULGENCE is a must!
