And
everything under the sun is in tune but the sun is eclipsed by
the moon.
This show
was supposed to be something really special. A PAIN OF SALVATION
show is always special as the band kind of re-invents itself for
every tour (and they don’t tour that often), presenting
a new look, new scenery and no song sounds live as on CD. Now
my Swedish favorite Prog metallers come over for an acoustic tour.
Fans which are familiar with the band’s 12:5
album might have an idea what PAIN OF SALVATION is able
when it comes to musicianship…

For that my
little me visits for the first the •
De Bosuil
• in Weert, Holland, a club I at least know by its
name as German Prog rockers Cryptex recorded their Live DVD (incl.
my photos) in this club last year, by the way on tour with PAIN
OF SALVATION at this time ;) I start pretty early, because
it’s Friday and I have to go through the entire Ruhr area
and, from Venlo on I only have country roads with tones of flashes
(every 2 km? – but hey, I’m a really well-behaved
driver now ;)). Water on the left, on the right asparagus fields
2m deeper with white canvasses covering them that look like snow
;)
The De Bosuil is easy to find and I like it straightaway. It’s
small, cozy, with Pink Floyd lyric lines on the borders of the
bar lights and I get cordially welcomed :) There is a balcony
but unfortunately closed for getting used as backstage area. The
stage is small and packed with instruments, cams and the stage
setting. It quickly gets clear: Tonight’s show will be recorded.
Bad for me as it is crowded, no photo pit and many stands always
in the way, most likely in front of the face of the musicians
I want to photograph. Well, you know, especially at a band like
PAIN OF SALVATION photographers (or is it just me?) would
like to snap to death ;)
However, with
a delay of more than a half hour (I think due to problems with
the cams and recording issues) PAIN OF SALVATION frontman
Daniel Gildenlöw enters his “living room” and
looks like as if he was just kicked out of bed. He takes place
in one of the chairs and asked the audience if someone is afraid
of death, then talks about is old nan and the meaning of this
living room in the style of the 70s as it rings at the door and
Daniel calls: “It’s open”…
…And
the guys of :: ÁRSTÍÐIR
:: come in. I am much curious now, because I don’t
know this Icelandic band and have just seen two of their current
videos prior the show, I actually fell downright in love with.
Surprisingly, Daniel keeps his seat and starts singing Road
Salt, wonderfully accompanied by ÁRSTÍÐIR.
Wow, that was awesome! Daniel leaves and ÁRSTÍÐIR
play own songs, a blend of Indie Folk and classic music, very
quiet, melancholically draped, romantic and mystical. Utmost beautiful
I tell ya. As someone said: if Iceland would sound, it would sound
like ÁRSTÍÐIR. They also play an Anathema
cover for which ANNEKE joins in. They joke and banter in
a mix of Dutch, English and Icelandic. Lovely. Truly lovely. Great
band, great show!
Setlist: Road Salt, Á Meðan Jörðin
Sefur, Heiðin, Ljóð í Sand, Everwake (Anathema),
Icelandic song, Nú Gleymist Ég, Shades, Tárin
Flying change
over and :: ANNEKE
VAN GIERSBERGEN :: enters the stage with her guitar
and kicks in with My Electricity, then playing songs of
her own, The Gathering and cover versions. In between still going
on with the jokes I even understand too. She seemed to have caught
a cold but doesn’t care. She is performing all alone but
gets joined by Gunnar Már Jakobsson (guitar) and Karl James
Pestka (violin) of ÁRSTÍÐIR during 4
Years and Time After Time. But the song that impresses
me most is the Dolly Parton cover version of Jolene. Enchantingly
beautiful. Goose bumps! ANNEKE looks tired but is a lively
and in high spirit as we know her and she of course infects her
audience too. Oooohhh, did I already mention her lovely, bloody
red faux fur high heels? Aaaahhhh… girls…
Setlist: My Electricity, 4 Years, Time After Time (Cindy
Lauper), Beautiful One, Jolene (Dolly Parton), Locked Away (The
Gathering), Circles, All I Want Is You (U2 cover)
It then takes
some time before :: PAIN
OF SALVATION :: finally enter the stage. Some stuff
gets removed but it doesn’t give more room on stage. Re-dressed
and refreshed Daniel Gildenlöw comes back, alongside his
mates and gets in a 2 1/2 hrs set with the title-track of the
upcoming acoustic album Falling Home. Of course
the band offers many surprises, some not intended ;) The most
outstanding song Holy Diver has to be, Dio’s Holy
Diver, as a Swing/Jazz/Reggae version. Unbelievable! Unbelievably
great. Breathtaking. But… attention gets drawn on the stage-tech
when he crawls between the drummer’s feet. One of the pedal’s
spring broke and causes a longer interruption the band bridges
with slapstick, stand-up comedy and strange talks between Daniel
and Léo ;) Daniel is afraid that all ruined the live recordings
or at least blows the time frame but he takes it with humor. He’s
talking about the roadies who have the hardest job on tour to
carry all these furniture in and out (leather couch, leather chairs,
racks, shelves, piano...) and the probably most valuable piece,
a plate that represents POS’ hometown Eskilstuna
as most worth living city, a title won in the 70s. By this chance
we also learn that’s today’s birthday of keyboarder
Daniel „D2“ Karlsson, who turned to 27. Happy Birthday
D2! :) Of course celebrated with a real cake with candles and
the crowd singing. And, by the way, instead of Ragnar, we have
now Roger Öjersson on guitar. And of course ÁRSTÍÐIR
and ANNEKE come on stage too, ANNEKE for a lovely
duet with Daniel, performing the Kris Kristofferson classic Help
Me Make It Through The Night. Huuuuh…hot! *laughs* There
are actually so many details on stage and going on you hardly
can keep in mind. I so hope that the recordings went well and
we, maybe with the new acoustic album, get a live DVD too ;) PAIN
OF SALVATION once again prove what talented and gifted musicians
they are (as well as ÁRSTÍÐIR and ANNEKE)
to play all these different versions and other band’s songs.
Truly awesome! As for me, this show was the best one I have seen
in 2013 so far, my Nr 1! This show was just amazing. PAIN OF
SALVATION is amazing. ÁRSTÍÐIR and
ANNEKE are amazing too! I am happy that I could attend
this show :) And it’s getting late. When I arrive at home
there is no time for sleep anymore and I directly head into my
work again (early shift). Who the fuck cares? Me happy me :)
Setlist: Falling Home, Diffidentia (Breaching The Core),
Linoleum, Mrs. Modern Mother Mary, Ashes, Help Me Make It Through
The Night (Kris Kristofferson cover with Anneke), To The Shoreline,
Holy Diver (Dio cover), Stress, Disco Queen, Second Love, Spitfall,
Iter Impius, The Perfect Element // Dust In The Wing (Kansas cover),
Chain Sling, 1979
As
we walk through the ashes
I whisper your name
A taste of pain to cling to
As we walk through the ashes
You whisper my name
Who's the one with the sickest mind…
