“Drinking faster as the sun burns” [Dajana]

[Dajana] Mornings at half past nine in Germany. First a sparkling wine to get out the sleeping bag, then breakfast (accompanied by the breakfast cover band Bonsai Kitten, who make it to play Alice Cooper’s Poison 4 times) and the first dark Köstritzer. Life’s great! And we need just solid basis as we start into the final and probably hardest festival day. Relentless energy and power without break. Well, almost without…

[Dajana]
The Saturday kicks off heavy with :: SKELETAL REMAINS :: a band definitely to pay homage ;)
[BRT] Rightly so, because they are extremely great, especially since they remind of Death, Sadus and Deicide, conjuring the early 90s Florida sound. The guys are super likeable, while singer Chris could be a reincarnation of Chuck Schuldiner. Last song is a cover version of Morgoth’s Body Count and Marc Grewe personally jumps on stage to sing this song. A grandiose finish of a great start into the last PSOA day! Even more likeable: the guys walk the festival ground afterwards to have with the fans.
Setlist: Extirpated Vitality, Homicidal Pulchritude, Sub Zero Termination, Anthropophagy, new song (no title yet), Traumatic Existence, Body Count (Morgoth cover)

[Dajana] High noon, time for some Doom. :: PROCESSION :: come first and have some issues with hippies, although they ain’t that far away themselves *laughs* ;) I feel some Candlemass-like epicness.
[Seda] Huuh, my hangover doesn’t make it easy to get out of the tent, so I stay where I am and just listen. It’s not bad what I got to hear…
[BRT] Doom for the breakfast ;) PROCESSION just kick me out of my socks. 3 longs songs, epicness to the max. Great, great, great! Singer Felipe Plaza got some cool charisma. Please let them play in darkness next time ;)
Setlist: Damnatio Memorae, Conjurer, To Reap Heavens Apart, Chants Of The Nameless

[Dajana] More Doom, heavier and with grunts and growls. I was much looking forward to see :: HOODED MENACE :: and they lived up to its “first” name but needed a bit more evilness for the “sur” name. Their performance could have been a little bit more wicked.
[BRT] The hooded men play hefty Death/Doom as its best. Finnish styled, you know… ;) Singing was maybe a bit monotonous. Nice guys anyway!

[BRT] Again Swedish Death Metal. :: DEMONICAL :: reach out to the crowd, but with an off-the-shelf sound. Most interesting is the intro that sounds like a mix of the Three Chinese With A Double Bass and The Internationale. Besides, rather insignificant, sorry.
[Dajana] Yep, DEMONICAL are fast and brutal and have a blistering sound, but of tedious equability. If you know one song you know them all.

[Dajana] Death, Doom, Death… Time for some Black Metal treatment. :: TSJUDER :: step in to deliver true Norwegian Black Metal. Evil, bestial, raw, merciless, no frills. A hell of ride. Just too much daylight. TSJUDER work best in a dark club with candles and fires and bloody red lights.
[BRT] Sewing-machine rattling. Old school black Metal… I like TSJUDER on CD but here they are definitely suffering from the sun and daylight.

[Seda] :: OBSCURA :: is one of those bands I know that manage to impress me a lot. Their music is quite progressive but blends many influences. Technical and demanding but great.
[Dajana] That’s too complex and tricky for me right now. I’d rather enjoy another beer and a broiler…
[BRT] Technically excellent at a good sound but emotionless played. Their complex stuff is surely impressing to watch and to listen to. I liked it way more in a club during the Hate Eternal tour.

[Dajana] There is not that much to say about :: HELRUNAR :: anymore that wasn’t said already. I like them a lot but tonight’s show was kinda unmotivated. Might be due to the stress. Only bassist Samiel was smiling all over his face. Singer Skald Draugir announced that this show would be the last one for longer time as the band will withdraw to write and record new songs.
[BRT] The sound during HELRUNARs show isn’t the best but still conveys emeotions and atmosphere of the songs. Facial expressions by Skald Draugir remind me somehow of Gollum but that makes him even more likeable. Sure, also HELRUNAR do better in a club but here it works too.
Setlist: Frostnacht, Unter dem Gletscher, Gratr, Nebelspinne, Ich bin die Leere, Älter als das Kreuz

[Dajana] Desaster and destruction we alone in favor of some substantial food and :: SULPHUR AEON :: leaving nothing than scorched earth in the tent. They got highly recommended to us, especially because of our affinity to Cthulhu. And well… they convinced right from the intro, causing gooseflesh. Ah, need the CD… damn… sold out. Then a tee… okay :) And just to mention: IA! IA! KTULU FTHAGHN!
[BRT] Ia Cthulhu fthagn… yeah… German newcomers and Cthulhu cultists SULPHUR AEON amazingly celebrate the memory of the Great Old Ones. Swedish-styled Death Metal with epic melodies and evoking singing. Stunning! The tent burns!

[Dajana] :: KORPIKLAANI :: were actually in the break included. But restless as I am I could not just sit anywhere around. KORPIKLAANI is one of those bands that gets out of line. But so far as I remember there is a folk metal band every year on the billing. You might like it or not. Tonight I got the feeling that KORPIKLAANI try to grow up and to get away from this silly humppa beer thing.
[BRT] Well… No! When it comes to music I can’t take jokes. Seriously. This might have been a good show but this folk humppa attitude gets terribly on nerves. Miscast. Definitely.

[Dajana] FINALLY! As for me we now bow for the secret headline of the whole festival :: CARCASS :: This is the band I was looking forward most. My expectations were high and they measured up, fully. Holy shit, what hell of a show! British surgeons delivered one of the best shows I have seen this year! Four-stringer and frontman Jeff Walker looks like Lemmy, is in best mood a jokes around. Also his mates (Bill Steer, Dan Ash, Daniel Wilding) are much delighted in playing and have visibly a blast on stage. As expected they go through the classics and play a best-of. Pure love! ;) Did they actually play songs from the upcoming comeback album Surgical Steel? Anyways… Did I already mention how awesome this show was? *laughs* Definitely the highlight of PARTY SAN OPEN AIR and the year 2013! Ah, I’m so looking forward to the new album and the upcoming tour in fall (supporting Amon Amarth…wtf???) CARCASS is back! Truly!
[Seda] It was just awesome! There are some certain bands you always link great memories to. CARCASS is such band. Despite of all these years and decades… CARCASS is still what they used to be. What a breathtaking show. I’m totally stoked, have greatest fun and waste all my energies partying. Everybody is headbanging, moshing, screaming. And some already pass out…
[BRT] Finally! It is utmost clear: CARCASS are the secret headliner, yes. CARCASS rock the PSOA stage, play all highlights of the past, all my faves and have a great stage deco. And then they even play my all-time fave Exhume To Consume…gooooooooseflesh!
Setlist: Inpropagation, Incarnated Solvent Abuse, (Genital Grinder, Exhume To Consume, This Mortal Coil, Corporal Jigsore Quandary, Reek Of Putrefaction, Heartwork)

[Dajana] Oh my gosh and fucking hell! This was amazing! I was actually not sure what to expect from :: VENOM :: I definitely did not expect such fucking awesome show! Definitely a worthy headliner to finish the PARTY SAN OPEN AIR 2013! So! And I’d like to allege that VENOM had the most fun of all on this evening.
[Seda] My highlight of the whole festival! Unbelievable! I finally saw Cronos live on stage. Yes, years and decades took its toll, hair got thinned out and his forehead got higher but he definitely did not lose any of his energy, power and vitality. Damn… I don’t wanna see this show and the festival coming to an end. But with Black Metal and In League With Satan we have to face the fact that a great show, a great weekend and a great festival comes to an end. I’m already so fucking looking forward to the next one and hope that this one year is over in a twinkling of an eye.
[BRT] Carcass was the secret headliner and VENOM the biggest surprise of the festival! It was just great. One hit followed the other and the VENOM mates were just brimming over with delight in playing, enthusing an exhausted crowd one last time. To the max. Admirable. Yes, I did not expect that either. Super, super, SUPER!
Setlist: Witching Hour, Welcome To Hell, Schizo, Live Like An Angel, 1000 Days In Sodom, Bloodlust, Leave Me In Hell, Don't Burn The Witch, Buried Alive, Countess Bathory, 7 Gates Of Hell, Warhead // Black Metal, In League With Satan, Pedal To Metal

Summary:
[Dajana] I’d say it was the best PARTY SAN OPEN AIR so far ;) Thank you Mieze & PSOA crew, thank you to all the people around and out there, all backers, securities and the Afghan food, which made this festival possible and such great event. You were, you are and you will be just great! And I can hardly await the next edition :)
[Seda] 3 days of awesome festival madness on a great area with great bands… my head is full of great memories. PARTY SAN OPEN AIR is a very comfortable, relaxed, pleasant and well-organized festival with great people. Thank you and see you next year!
[BRT] Yeah, again a fantastic PARTY SAN OPEN AIR, and just barely survived. And now I’m filled with melancholy, because I have one, ONE! year to wait… Damn! Terrific atmosphere, great fun, great bands, great people, great weather, what more a metal head can long for? See you next year!
